Trapdoorians, the Third Annual Trap Door Story contest (TDSC III) is back. Here's your chance to showcase your creativity and writing abilities. The rules are simple:
" so that the judges know which entries to read. Then post your complete story in that thread. Include the final word count and your actual age in your first post as well. * The minimum length requirement for all entries is 500 words, but there is no maximum length restriction. * All valid submissions automatically earn two points. If you are a House member, these points go towards your House in the following week's Competition. * All entries are judged based on concept, creativity, grammar, spelling, and the like. Entries will fall into one of two age categories: the first group is for members 16 and younger; the second group is for members 17 and older. Keep your eyes open for a judging rubric later on. Winning entries earn extra points towards the writer's House, if applicable. * All entries will be judged by dianella and Robin_Sprouts. Feel free to post here or PM them with questions. * All entries are due by Wednesday, August 18, 2004. You can always post it earlier, however, so that people have a chance to read and comment on your story.[/ul] Remember, we're all putting a lot of time and thought into our stories, so comments are always appreciated. We're here to enjoy each other's talents and also to grow as writers. Enough talk. Now summon your Muse and start writing!

I e-mailed the judges two days ago with a question, and they haven't had time to answer so I hope no one minds if I ask here...Does anyone know if the story has to be a completed work?

Yeah, Di and Robin are usually pretty busy. Um, I'm not really in charge of the rules, but I would assume that it's okay, provided that you understand that you will still be judged as if that's the entire work.
Pkia wrote this a while ago, and it sorta relates:
It's one story that's all posted at once - not something that gets added to like Nialle's "Weather" or my "TD Story." If people want to continue updating their story after it's been marked, that's cool, but probably not a good idea because that would mean that you didn't finish your story off in a neat place.
So I think as long as what you do submit has a beginning, an end, and some development...

Thanks, that helps. What I have is 65 pages in a word document. I would say it does have development. Right now it isn't nearly finished, but if I do decide to submit it, I at least know that I ought to find a good place to cut it off at.

65 pages! I've never been able to write a continuous story before. I'd always get stuck or distracted or something. My OotP fanfic was probably the longest; I never finished, though, so it's a lost cause now.
Go for it, Leia. ;D
And don't forget, everyone. The deadline is in about 2 1/2 weeks!

Question- can you submit multiple entries? I've got a few ideas I'm tossing between... and you know me, I'm indecisive.

I'm not sure... I think last year there were no double entries, so maybe there was a one submission per person rule.
Can anyone remember?

I don't remember, as I've never entered before. Sorry Ko.
I do have another question though. Stories should be rated PG-13, yes? I mean, they shouldn't be any more intense than that, correct?

Mmm...why don't we just say one entry per person? Is that okay?
Leia, this whole site seems to be somewhere around PG-13 because of the different ages of members here. To be safe, I'd keep it PG-13-ish, but if there are going to be more risque parts...just give a disclaimer or something.

Nah, it's cool. I already wrote alternate parts for the risque/violent scenes, you know, toning them down some, back when I wrote them...this beast is a work-in-progress that started in March. So if I do decide to submit it, I'm all set. ^^

I think anything over PG-13 is alright as long as you put something in the subject line of the topic thingy like what Chris did last time with Slash or whatever. I mean, it IS a good idea to work with a target audience in mind but it shouldn't be there to restrict you.
And okay... one entry it is... now I have to think of something...

Right, I remember Chris doing that, but I think his was still PG-13. I mean, it was slash, which might be offensive to some people, but there wasn't anything really graphic in there, if I remember correctly.

*nods* Yeah, that's cool. Maybe if anyone has a concern that their story would not be PG-13 they could always just raise that first or something in the topic if they wanted to.
Um, I note that no entries have been posted yet...

Oh, I think I forgot to add something that I'm pretty sure was on the rules last year.
If you are not a current House member, you are still encouraged and welcomed to submit an entry to the story contest. In fact, if you're a hopeful at the moment, this TDSC may even help you get accepted, since you can request that your points go to a certain House! Here's a chance to both display your writing skills and show how much you care about a House! (I would assume that the same goes for Alumni.)

*There have been some modifications to the TDSC rules, in case you haven't heard:
A wee reminder. Want to bring home some house points? Enter the Trap Door Story Contest in Flourish & Blotts. Entrants receive 4, count them, 4, house points for participating! Deadline for entries is August 25. And even if you haven't got a story to write, drop by to read - you wouldn't believe the writing talent lurking round these boards.
