Chapter 10: A Celebration of Death
It was dark when he opened his eyes. Through the hole in the wall, he could see the stars shining above him. The sky was completely clear, and a cold breeze was rustling the straw beneath him. He sat up, and removed a piece of straw that had attached itself to his cheek. His face and chest were covered with small scratches where he had been turning during his sleep. He heard the faint sound of music outside, and decided to investigate.
He stood up, and reached for his blue robes. He saw that they had been fully repaired, and cleaned, as there was neither blood nor a tear on the shoulder. He slipped them on, and walked outside. The immense fire was still burning, only this time there were several adults dancing around it, holding flaming sticks and chanting to the music. Aeon could see that their whole bodies were painted scarlet and gold, which gleamed brightly in the fire. They were also wearing extravagant masks, all of different shapes and sizes.
Aeon saw Snape, sitting on a log close to the fire, deep in conversation with Vatrana Uni. There was no sign of Shayak. He walked over to them, gazing in awe at the massive celebrations taking place. There were hundreds of villagers, dancing, playing instruments and laughing. This must be a gathering of villages from across the island.
Just before he reached them, he felt a strong hand grab his wrist, and spin him around. Aeon felt a small yell escape his lips, but when he saw the pretty face of Shayak smiling back at him, he relaxed. ‘Care for a dance?’ she asked. Aeon didn’t think that Snape and Vatrana would mind him not being there for a while longer, so he accepted.
The noise level was very high near the celebrations, so Aeon was forced to raise his voice. ‘What’s this celebration for? And why are there so many people?’ She stopped and turned to face him.
‘We are celebrating your arrival, and the fulfilment of our legacy. As soon as the spirit is removed from the temple, we will be freed from our life here. There will be no need to stay. And there are so many people because this is the gathering of all the villagers.’
‘But I thought our arrival here meant your people’s demise? From the ‘evil force’ that we will be bringing with us?’
‘Enough questions, we can talk about this later. Now, can we dance?’ She smiled at him once more, and they finally walked over to the fire. She put her arms around his neck, and started to dance. At first, Aeon was unsure, but he was so drawn in by the beating drums and Shayak’s movements that he soon lost himself in the party. He was soon dancing faster than any of the villagers, and soon they were standing around the young pair, watching them. The drumming finished, and Aeon stopped. He was feeling slightly dizzy, and decided to go and join Snape. He walked off too massive applause, and found himself blushing furiously.
As he walked away, a new beat started up, and the tribe returned to dancing. Snape was now sitting alone, as Vatrana was supervising something by the fire.
‘Hello.’ Said Aeon cheerfully, waving his hand right in Snape’s face. He looked like he was lost in a dreamland somewhere. He blinked suddenly, and jumped backwards. He toppled off the log he was sitting on, and landed hard on his back. Aeon laughed out loud, and Snape started to frown at him. ‘What’s up?’ he asked.
‘Nothing. I was just thinking.’ Snape replied, his face loosening a bit.
‘About what?’ pestered Snape. He was in a good mood, but didn’t know why. There was no reason to be so joyous.
‘Do you know what these people are celebrating?’ Snape inquired.
‘They’re celebrating their freedom.’ Aeon said casually.
‘They’re celebrating their death.’ Snape said sadly. He bowed his head. And Aeon realised. Their freedom was death. And they had caused it. If they had not come here…

‘I never realised…I didn’t think it was like that…but they all seem so…happy.’ Aeon’s mood was rapidly changing from good to bad. They were sacrificing themselves so that they could be rescued. ‘But, surely it’s a good thing? I mean, if we hadn’t come here, Vanadium would still have found this place, and killed them without warning. At least now, they know that their legend is complete.’
‘I suppose you are correct. For someone so young, you are incredibly smart. You remind me of someone I once knew…Anyway, Vatrana and I have had a discussion. We both feel it best if we leave tonight, without the risk of danger. We can wait for the food and celebrations to finish, and then we must depart.’
‘And what help are they going to give us? We still need to make our way to the temple, and find out what and where the artefact is…’
‘They will give us a guide. Have no worries. All will be resolved. Now, lets just enjoy our remaining time here.’ As he spoke, several villagers came into view, each carrying a large beast on their shoulders. ‘It looks like the food has arrived.’
The next couple of hours for Aeon were spent watching the boars that the hunters had brought back being prepared for eating. They were first of all stripped of their smooth black coats, which were then taken off by some of the younger women in the village, probably to be used for clothing. As the wild pigs were being roasted on the spits, Aeon felt the juices in his mouth build up. He hadn’t had a decent meal for a day now, but then again, he realised, he hadn’t had a decent meal for twelve years beforehand.
When they were finished, the rest of the feast was brought out. Fruits and more fruits, green salads, fresh dairy products, more fresh foods than even the Wizards Order had. Aeon stared greedily, and was soon joined by Snape. The villagers were amazed at the way they looked at an apple, as if it were pure gold. And when the juicy meat joined the rapidly filling table, everyone stopped celebrating, and sat down. There was loud talking, and a feeling of excitement in the air. They seemed so happy about tonight, thought Aeon, that there was no reason he should feel guilty over their deaths. There wasn’t even any proof that Vanadium will find them here. With that in mind, Aeon’s conscience eased up on him, and allowed him to have fun.
The conversations stopped suddenly. Vatrana, who was sat at the head of the table, stood up, and held a wooden goblet above her head. ‘Today,’ she began, ‘Is a very special day. The legend has come to fore, and I declare that from this moment on, we celebrate our freedom!’ This was accompanied by rousing cheers, and soon everybody was getting stuck in to the delicious food in front of them. Gradually, the party got underway again, only this time with even more celebrating. There were people dancing on the tables, playing with fire and even holding drinking contests.
Whilst these merriments were proceeding, Snape indicated to Aeon that they sneak off and start their journey. They quietly walked around the table, and Aeon saw Snape give Vatrana a short look. She rushed off, and they headed of to the path leading towards the temple.

Chapter 11: A Guiding Star
Aeon looked along the dark and narrow path. It twisted through the wood, until it eventually disappeared out of sight. Glancing up above the treetops, Aeon saw the imposing silhouette of the temple. Even from this distance, it looked massive. Snape was striding back and forth, checking for something every now and then. Aeon was leaning back against the smooth bark of a short tree.
Eventually, the sound of approaching footsteps alerted them both, and they strained their eyes to get a glimpse of the approaching figure. It was Vatrana, alone but carrying a large bundle.
‘Sorry I am late, Severus, but I wanted to pick this up. It is a gift for you, Aeon.’ She slowly unravelled the robes wrapped around it, and revealed a shining silver sword. The golden handle was decorated with a round ruby, similar to the one on the egg. Aeon saw a name carved on to the blade. He read it silently, mouthing the words he read: ‘Godric Gryffindor’.
‘It is the sword of Godric Gryffindor. It was lost to all for over a thousand years, but it found its way back. It is yours now. Take it.’ She offered him the sword. Aeon was unsure, but out of respect he placed both hands on the golden handle. ‘Lost for over a thousand years, eh?’ he said to himself. ‘Doesn’t look two bad for a thousand year old sword.’
‘Now, we are just waiting for your guide. Ah, here she is.’ A second figure appeared, from the same direction Vatrana had come. As the moonlight revealed her face, Aeon was shocked to see that it was Shayak. She smiled at him, and bowed to Snape, before turning to speak to her mother. They spoke in a foreign tongue, very rapidly, but Aeon could definitely hear a note of panic in her voice. She turned back to Snape and Aeon, and spoke to them.
‘We must hurry. I have been following tracks of Darkness, and found a large group of them nearby.’
‘Are they following us? We could do without fighting them again.’ Aeon shivered as a breeze swept past them.
‘I’m afraid that it is far worse than that. The appearance of Darkness must mean magic has been used on the island. And unless either of you have…’ she trailed off.
‘I haven’t’ replied Snape.
‘Nor have I,’ said Aeon. ‘Does this mean that Vanadium’s here? On the island?’
‘I am afraid that it is a distinct possibility. We must move quickly.’ He turned back to Vatrana. ‘We thank you for your aid. Are you sure that you want to stay here? We could relocate you to a safer place…’
‘No! My place is here, with my people. Good Luck to the three of you.’ She embraced Shayak, and Aeon saw a silver tear trickling down her face. ‘I will see you again, Shayak. Do not worry about that.’
‘Will we meet again?’ Shayak asked.
‘All roads will eventually lead to the Great Path. Some will cross along the way.’
Shayak was fighting back tears, and she ripped away from her mother, disappearing along the trail. Snape and Aeon followed, with one last glance at the retreating figure behind them. Aeon was gripped with a sadness that he had felt when Stubb was killed. In the distance, Aeon could still hear the sounds of the party; the beating of the drums, the villagers cheering, and the sky was illuminated with the flickering orange glow of the fire.
Shayak stayed ahead of them for most of the journey. She did not speak, just led them to their destination. Aeon knew how she was feeling. He had felt like this after he saw his father beyond the flames, being torn away from him. He lowered his head, and carried on walking.
For a few minutes, the only sound was the crunching of the gravel beneath their feet. Aeon had taken to examining his new sword. The ruby was exactly identical to the one in his egg. He had tried pressing it, but nothing happened. It was solid. The blade of the sword was twice as large as that of the Soulless creatures who pursued them even now.
Snape too, had remained silent, but for a very different reason. The enormity of the task had now dawned on him. If Vanadium’s beasts caught up with them, the Ancient Power of the founders would fall into his hands, making him indestructible. Had he made a mistake in bringing this power to the attention of the world?

Shayak had stopped suddenly. They caught up with her, and stood alongside, wondering what she had noticed. ‘There is a movement nearby, over there, in the pine trees. I’m sure of it.’
‘I can’t see a thing. Are you positive?’ Shayak didn’t need to answer, for at that moment, a beast leapt out at him. He ducked, and its flailing claws narrowly missed his scalp. He drew his sword from his robe belt, and held it, poised to defend the next attack. But the beast just stood there. Then another one strolled out of the woods on the opposite side, trapping them. Aeon gasped another Darkness appeared, and then another.
Six of them encircled them now, all crouched on their front legs, ready to pounce, Aeon, Snape and Shayak stood back to back, Snape armed with only his wand.
‘Six for the six Death Eaters of Vanadium. At least we know that he himself is not here.’
‘Let’s be thankful for that after we get out of here shall we?’ Aeon said, his voice a pitch higher then normal. Snape made to cast a spell, but Shayak stopped him.
‘Using magic will only create another Darkness. We must fight our way out.’ Shayak leapt forward, out of the beast’s circle landing behind one of them. With a sharp slice behind her, she carved through the mist and made it disband into thin air. Aeon took the hint, and lunged forward, stabbing one in the forehead. It too disappeared, and the remaining four pounce. One landed on Snape, pinning him to the ground, while another leapt into the air, shooting a spike towards him. Just in time, he managed to summon his strength and roll to the side.
Shayak had managed to wound the beast that had jumped upon her, and as it stumbled around, she decapitated it. Aeon too had managed to fatally wound the one attacking him, and instantly the two of them spun round, freeing Snape from his captors with a single cut of their weapons.
Snape stood up, and the three of them brushed the dirt off themselves. ‘We must hurry now. We have already lost a considerable amount of time. Lets go.’
With a relieved glance at each other, Shayak and Aeon both continued walking their path to the temple.
