I read the Giver on my own in 5th grade, but then this summer it was required to read. i loved it back then, and i loved it again! that woman is insane. as a summer project, we had to write journal entries of our thoughts on the book, and after that we had to write a letter to the Giver from Jonas about Elsewhere, and we had to have a response letter from Giver. min. 300 per letter. but i had no problem with it. i love the way it ends. it's complete open possibilities. it makes you think. we also had to read Anthem by Ayn Rand. It's similar to Giver, but the societies are somewhat different. I recommend it.

Who doesn't love resurrecting threads from 7 years ago...? ;-)
Anyway, I recently read The Giver and Gathering Blue. In addition, there's now a third book in the "series" titled Messenger. While I did love all three, I was disturbed by each one in turn because of how real the issues are. I'm not against them being read in school, but I'm glad I read them as an adult who actually enjoys reading as a hobby. :-)
For anyone interested who doesn't know, you do find out the fate of Jonas and baby Gabe in Messenger.
