I set his karma to -100 because the newbie in question is, in fact, the same kid who used to stalk Lumers and Soupy, send threatening emails, and post abusive garbage all over our site. I also banned him and took preemptive measures to keep him from getting back on the site. Sometimes I really hate being the bad cop, but in this case, I can't not do this - he's a silvertongued liar with a violent streak. Fortunately there are only two people I've had to take this stance with.

I don't get how he could think that he'd be welcome after all that he's done. Thank you for making us feel safe En. I appreciate everything you do for us *hugs*

...but...then why is s/he allowed back on the site? There is only so much that En can do to ban someone from the site. Blocking usernames, email addresses and IP address is the extent of it. It's easy to get a new free email address and thinking up a new username isn't hard either. IP addresses change everytime you make a connection if you have dial-up or stay fixed with DSL or Cable, but anyone with a some computer knowledge can change their IP address as well.
The other thing is, for all we know, this guy could be an adult, not a kid, and just knows how to make himself seem like a kid on forums and chatrooms, which makes him even more dangerous. En is doing everything she can to keep him out of Trapdoor 2, and I have to to say that you are doing a marvelous job of it my dear. I only wish there was something I could do to help you out with all that.

Indeed. Also, not to change the topic too much, but check out this page we made last time this happened to keep yourself updated on things that you can do to protect yourself online.

Shucks, thanks, guys, but I don't really do that much - and as Nie pointed out, can't. And I don't like banning people at all if I can help it, but when someone's threatening one of you - well, I get big-brother-y
Meanwhile! Back to the subject of karma. Most of the sites I've visited with this feature active give each other karma points for saying funny or helpful things. Is that kind of how we're doing ours?

Meanwhile! Back to the subject of karma. Most of the sites I've visited with this feature active give each other karma points for saying funny or helpful things. Is that kind of how we're doing ours? Personally, I exalt somebody when they have been really helpful regarding a situation etc. Board stuff I mean.
Just a side note but Wiz's question has been answered via PM, so you guys know.
And on a general note, we do note Smite people because they've been absent.

If you smite someone by accident you can always fix it by Exalting them later.
But yeah, a lot of places I go to use karma to reward people who are funny, helpful or otherwise a positive influence on the board. I guess those a good reasons to reward people, but what else could we do?

En in Slyth mode sez: What if, while one is trying to run up posts for a topic point, one were to bribe people to post there by offering a free exaltation to anyone who posts in one's thread?

Hmmm. Hopefully it won't come to that. I suppose that things like karma begging and using karma as a commodity might happen, but if we say from the outset that this is really frowned upon, and those who are caught doing it will be smitten, I hope that we will be able to nip it in the bud.

Check out this neat little way to give and receive exalts that I just thought up, while being nice to each other at the same time and getting people interacting more.
A little bribery never really hurt anyone, especially when we're trying to get the board more active. That is the whole point of this, right?

I'm going to have to agree with Nierme on this one - and throw in another idea as well: what if we abandoned the now-defunct Gringott's and used the karma points as currency instead? So that people who have been working really hard to add to threads around the board can use accrued karma to buy... abandoned hot topic points, for example?

However, how could members gain Karma fast enough to keep the buying-system going? Because then, would Karma points be used in Lytter Alley as well?
