With the election coming up I thought it'd be good to exchange a few opinions on Barack Obama. I'm not as knowledgeable about him as I should be, and there are possibly other people out there like me, so this way we can share what we know and get spurred on to do a bit more research.
I watched the debates and checked out the candidates' stances on certain issues, and ended up supporting Obama early on because although he wasn't the one I most agreed with, I did generally agree with him and thought he had the best chance of standing up to the Republican nomination.
But in the past few weeks I was really annoyed when he supported the FISA act, especially when he'd said previously that he wouldn't grant immunity to Telecommunications companies. I also saw a clip of his speech in Berlin where he was talking about terrorism and coming together to fight it (though admittedly, I did just see a clip and don't know how it fit into the speech or if it was taken out of context by the media).
It most likely won't change who I vote for, since in my opinion no matter what he does in the next few months, Obama will remain the lesser evil compared with McCain. But it seems like he's waffling on some really important beliefs to gain support for the election, and I find that a bit disheartening.

So long as someone replaces Bush Im happy.
But I can't really say anything about American politics, Ive been told that the US is in major financal difficulty. And we think we're getting squeezed by the credit crunch.

Emma, I remember saying that same thing about only needing someone to replace Bush for me to be happy. I think Nialle told me that that's not quite enough, though. There will always be someone just as mean or stupid who can cause the same amount of damage if he's elected. So getting rid of Bush isn't enough because he's easily replaceable, and we need to make sure he's replaced by someone good and not just as bad.
Unfortunately I think anywhere in the world that relies on oil is being squeezed. The U.S. is, but prices from fuel to food to anything that has to be transported at all is rising in the U.K., too, and I even saw something about Japanese fishers striking because the cost of fuel is going up so much there, too. The thing about it I really dislike, though, is that it's the cost of all the essentials that are rising, so the lower and middle class people are the ones who are hardest hit, since they don't have any choice when it comes to buying food and energy and water... the costs of clothes and shoes are going down, so people who would normally spend a lot of their budget on those things aren't affected by the price increases as much.
