Oh, the thing about diseased mangy Australians huh? That was just in case my school in the US thought I was such. I mean, they think we have diseases here like malaria and tubercolosis, which I therefore have to be tested for since it's presumably so rife here in Melbourne. Heeey! I resent both of those comments! Americans (and the US) don't think you Aussies are diseased and such! We're just protective of our country--as Australia must be! We don't want some unknown disease from some country across the ocean infecting ANYONE in the US or anywhere else! It's similar to Mad Cow Disease--we test our cows to make sure they don't have it, and then slaughter them and send them off to other countries. Doesn't Australia make foreigner's do certain tests before coming into your country? And you're making us out to look like a bunch of snobs! We help third world countries, and we don't put down countries that have lower or higher statuses than us! Mind you, there are some people in the WORLD (NOT just the US) who don't like other countries for very good reasons. I think it's good that we test anyone coming into or leaving the country for certain things. It keeps the country (for the most part) clean and healthy. For instance, you're not allowed to bring fruit in from other countries for fear of fruit flies that might be inhabiting the fruit you bring in. they destroy crops! but yeah. just thought i'd comment on those biased comments.

Geez. We weren't being serious about it.
While I appreciate the whole thing about quarrantines and border protection the fact remains that I have to be tested for diseases such as malaria which if I were a US citizen I would not have to be subject to. I'm sure other countries also have that policy but hey, I was only pointing out the fact that I am being subject to this because I'm from another country.

Oh. But it's for your (and America's) protection! What if you did have malaria (knock on wood, and pray that you don't) and you didn't know? and it wasn't required to test you for it and then boom! everyone has it! what then? (there goes my overdramatic, catastrophic mind... )

Most colleges do require testing though. I already had all my Hepatitis shots because they require proof of immunization to enroll in public schools after elementary school.
And about the TB I actually did develop a pink spot on my forearm. I'm actually just sensitive to everything. I had a spot where they pricked my finger and where they gave my tetanus shot.
I didn't realize Australia was a breeding ground for malaria Ko. I guess I won't be visiting lilg's shed anytime soon. I miss lilg....
My friend Hilary moved to Australia earlier this summer. I'm pretty sure she said she had to get shots, but I'm not sure if it was required by the US or by Australia...

Well, in the unlikely event that things REALLY got out of hand, isn't that what the CDC is for? But yeah, about those shots, usually you get a lot of boosters and stuff as a kid anyway and you just have to prove that you've had them and whatever when you go to school, and all schools would have different requirements. No hard feelings, ice.
The thing is, with the malaria shot, they actually inject an inert strain of malaria into you so that you develop antibodies to it. That's why I thought it was the same with TB. But yeah, Sands, if you got the pink spot did they make you do other things like have X-rays of your chest and stuff? Apparently there is an injection that most people would have taken as a baby which can affect the outcome of the TB test...

Argh, the reason I hate injections is because my dad is a doctor and you know when you're a kid and you get lots of shots for school or whatever like tetanus and rubella and stuff like that, so he'd come home and after dinner he'd get me and my sister and do our injections. I would totally freak out and lock myself in my room. I just remember one time he was chasing me around the house with a needle in his hand because I didn't want to get my shots.

Yeah Ice, it was pretty bad. My dad doesn't have the best eyesight either, so he'd do a few aiming things first (like you know when people sort of aim with darts and go forwards and backwards a few times) and totally freak me out. What's worse about needles is that when I was really little, like 5 years old, I used to have to get them in my butt, because my arms were too skinny. My life is just one medical comedy after another.
Hahaha, I suppose you could get sedated if you get a tattoo ice, but you know, part of the experience is the feeling of getting a tat. Seriously, when I got mine I was really nervous but it didn't hurt half as much as I expected it to. I think if you think it will really kill and hurt like hell and you'll be screaming and crying then when you actually get it done it's like, "oh, is that all?"

yeah, that'll be me. i'm so overdramatic. i get a slight cough/sore throat and walk around saying my goodbyes to everyone. lol. that's hilarious. i can just picture a man wearing a white doctor's coat and holdind a rather large needle that is moving up and down over a young badger-resembling child's butt. I had to get one in my butt at 5, too! I actually think it was my tetanus. you have to get them every ten years, right? that makes sense. i just got another.

There are some tattooists and piercers who are licensed to use anesthetic. They're a little hard to come by and charge through the nose, but they are out there for those who like the idea of body decoration but don't thnk they can withstand the pain. Personally, I don't mind the pain. It hurts and all, but I think of it as making it feel more like an achievment. Like if you wanted to swim the English Channel it wouldn't be the same without experiencing the aches and pains in every muscle and the exhusted feeling for days after completing it. It's all part of the experience.
