I'm starting this topic as a notice board of sorts for important news about social activism. There are things that you can do to change the world. They might be small, individual acts, but hopefully if more people are aware then more people will be inclined to take part and make a difference to the injustices that exist around us.
If you know of something that is a good cause, put it here so we all can be more aware of what's going on around us.
I'll start. The Invisible Night Commute is something I am taking part in next weekend, and if you're interested you can check to local cities to see where the march is taking place near you. It should be a fun night and, besides helping to save children, you'll also get to sleep under the stars with friends and like-minded strangers!
----
Every night in Uganda, thousands of children leave their homes and walk to nearby towns for refuge. They do this out of fear of abduction. Every week thousands of other Ugandan children are abducted from their homes and forcibly drafted to become child soldiers in the current conflict. As they are unskilled in armed combat, many of these children are killed by miltants and in guerilla skirmishes.
The Global Night Commute is a worldwide event which will take place on April 29, 2006. It will feature people from around the world converging on urban centers in solidarity with displaced Ugandan children attempting to avoid capture by the Lord's Resisance Army (LRA).
The Commute is scheduled to occur in most major cities in the US (but if you're from other countries you can participate as well!). The goal of this movement is to raise awareness and ultimately end Africa's logest running conflict by facilitating a change in the policies of the US government in regard to the situation.
There is a film being made about this and all all the sites there will be filmmakers who will put the footage of the commute into a film about Ugandan children (there's a rough cut of it available on the internet at http://www.invisiblechildren.com).
FACTS:
-Northern Uganda called the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today because of the lack of attention
-1.7 million people forcibly displaced
-An estimated 20- 50,000 children abducted to fight as soldiers
-Tens of thousands of children commute nightly
-130 people die per day in Northern Uganda due to violence
On April 29th in over 130 cities across the country, thousands are lying down to demand that our government take a stand and put an end to child abduction, the need for night commuting, and war in northern Uganda.
