Eeek. That's a dark and dismal tone to set
I wonder why she chose the word "hallows"? It conjures up a lot of imagery of ghosts, for me.

When I first read the title on MuggleNet, a chill went through my body. Exciting!!
Doesn't "hallows" also have a tone of respect? I guess that ties everything up rather well: there'll be the final battle between Harry and Voldemort, but there'll also be remembrance of Harry's parents, Sirius, Dumbledore...and whoever else we're going to lose.
Oooh, I'm so excited...!

I thought of ghosts too when I first heard it.
I went on JK Rowlings site and went through the little search for the hangman to guess the title. It was hard. I was so sleepy, but so stubborn.
I'm excited. My sister is making crazy camp out for the book plans. It's sad, because last time I was so tired I just wanted to take a nap in the middle of Borders.
But I'm also a bit sad. I mean we've all been waiting (and will continue to wait some more) for the final book, but at the same time it's like the end of an era.

The news report that I read also stated that JK hinted the death of 'two wizards, possibly the boy wizard himself' - I suppose thats a speculation thats been going through everyone's minds for a while now.
Now, the title - the word 'hallow' means: "consecrate - render (an object) sacred by means of (religious) rites".
This could be a possible reference to Voldemort's horcruxes which have been rendered precious by means of magical rites.
Deathly could be a reference to the fact that someone has to be killed to create the horcruxes or that death occurs to someone whilst Harry is attempting to destroy them.
The first clue in the jigsaw. .

Thanks, Wiz, I was going to look it up - the reason it evokes ghosts for me is because of All Hallows' Eve - but there's also the adjectival form that is sometimes used to mean "venerable" - the "hallowed halls" of an old building or something. Hm. Lots of possible connotations.
I do wonder whether Deathly Hallows is a place though. Possibly even the place Harry will have to confront Voldemort? Or... is it possible that the Deathly Hallows are what lie on the other side of the Veil?

Oooh I found something interesting!
I kept looking up "hallows," and everything said it was a transitive verb, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But if we take the word to refer to tarot cards (and by association, the four Houses and Voldemort's Horcruxes), it makes a lot more sense.
I'm also having a bit of discussion with a friend about the choice of "deathly" versus "deadly". Anyone have any thoughts on that?

When I saw Hallows I thought... Godrics Hallow. At the end of the 6th book doesn't Harry say he wants to go back to his parents house?
As far as death goes... I believe she said one person is now not going to die who was going to die, but instead two people are going to die who were not going to die. This makes me think that MORE than 2 people are going to die... and I definitely wouldn't put it past her.

Surely there'll be a good amount of deaths...which sounds like an odd thing to say. But I'm assuming those two deaths she's been hinting at will be major characters.

'Deadly' can sometimes mean just dangerous - 'deathly' gaurentees that it has something to do with someone dying.

Hm... I was thinking that the "deathly hallows" might be the place on the other side of the Veil, for the same reason that Wiz gave, sort of. Because "deadly" could just mean perilous and "deathly," I'm thinking, refers to being "of death," and hence my thinking that the only physical place we know about where death is is the space on the other side of the veil....

Personally I look the UK Adult cover best. I want that necklace or whatever it is. XD
The others...well let's just say the US cover made me go all like "OMG! The World is Mine" and sing along to David Guetta.
The UK children's cover reminds me of ali baba.
So now I suppose HP fans all over the world are expected to start deciphering all clues given in the cover art and all that stuff. Well I believe that the UK Children's cover shows how the trio discovered Mundungus Fletcher's secret loot. You know all the stuff he was nicking...kind of like a treasure under the floorboard thing.
The US children's cover, apart from the Guetta thing, reminds me of Zeus about to strike with lightning, or even better yet, Dragonball Z. ;D Haha I'm such a geek.
As for the UK Adult cover...I have a hunch the S may be referring to either Salazar Slytheirn, or Severus or possibly Sirius. I do hope she brings in Sirius again...because seriously this whole thing of being glomped and eaten by a mere curtain, is, how shall I put it, degrading ok?

I looked at a big version of the UK kids' version, because that's the one you also get in Australia, and it looks REALLY weird up close, like Ron and Hermy are clowns or something because they have awful makeup on, and Harry looks like an action hero ready to karate chop his way through the money.
I'm trying really hard to read the blurb in the text... it says: Harry is waiting in Privet Drive. The Order of the Phoenix is coming to escort him safely away without Voldemort and his followers knowing - if they can. But what will Harry do then? How can he fulfil the momentous and seemingly impossible task that Professor Dumbledore has left him with?
Hmmm. I don't know how informative this is...
