Gah! Now when I think of Sauron I'm going "Daisy, Daisy" in my head...
Personally, one of the X-Files eps that freaks me out (besides Tooms of course ) is the Hell Money one in Season 3, partially because I was raised to believe in the Hungry Ghost festivals and we did burn hell money for our ancestors and stuff, but I hopefully won't ever be in a situation when I have to partake in an illegal organ-donation lottery... Oh, that and Lucy Liu guest starring in it and having the worst Cantonese accent. Ever.

*cracks up mightily*
I've been sitting here trying to think if any X episodes really hit a cultural button with me, and the only one I can think of is the Greys baseball team one
Ones about unnatural storms, like the weatherman one, do hit me because of my cultural background, I guess; storms are a big part of midwest-USA culture. Like, you're not really an Iowan until you have a story you can tell about some huge storm that nearly took out your house or killed you. I've got about 6 of my own plus 50 or 60 collected ones from other people, so I'm like, Iowa elite or something

Back to 28 Days Later for a second... what exactly is the scary thing about the film? I mean, the story is what I found scary, the concept and the whole procreating thing, the government closing its borders... but the film itself? Not that bad, is it?

Ha. Want to watch a really un-scary "scary" movie? Go see Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows. It was on TV the other day and compared to the original Blair Witch Project... this was so schiezer I didn't know whether I should laugh or start complaining about it to everyone I know (and actually, I ended up doing both). It's like, a movie about these people trying to do a Blair Witch hunt sort of thing and all these weird things start happening to them and yeah, but it's so movie-ish, unlike the original film. Boo.
Maybe it's because an idea like Blair Witch Project can't actually be replicated without being ripped off or looking cheesy or something, but yeah. It wasn't that scary, except for the shock bits (e.g. nurse opens curtain and a spooky little girl just appears etc.) but yeah.

I've always been a little difficult to scare, so while I love a good horror film, I'm really picky about them.
I didn't find the first Blair Witch very frightening either except for the last scene, which was a great way (from a horror standpoint) to send someone away from a theater.
My favourite scary movies are the original Halloween (which unfortunately has lost some of its original impact after all of the sequels) and Psycho. I guess that sounds a bit old-fashioned, huh?

Oooh, Psycho. I remember the first time I watched that. I love how the simplest things can add the creepiest effects and stuff, like the swinging lightbulb and the birds and stuff like that. I didn't really like the last scene though- the value of the whole scary set up sort of detracted. But yeah, that one is a classic scary one.
(Can't say the same for Halloween, I haven't seen it because I am wimpy )

Alright, The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar came out this past weekend, and I just went and saw it today. Holy cow, that movie was so awesome. I love the way Japanese do things sometimes. I think they've gotten really good at making the type of movies that really get you tense and/or scared. The imagery in this movie is very powerful, very suspenseful. I've played a game called Fatal Frame that's also done by the Japanese and takes place in a Japanese setting, and this movie reminded me so much of that game throughout the entire thing, because so much of the imagery used was very similar, but yet very powerful. Ooh, it's just giving me cold chills thinking about it again!
So has anyone else seen the movie yet? There's another movie coming out soon with Michael Keaten called White Noise that looks pretty suspenseful, too. The Boogeyman looks okay, but I'm not so sure about that one.

I don't think it's the Japanese movie-making that's gotten better. I think it's just that they have more interesting ideas.
I watched the original for The Grudge (Ju-On) just tonight. It wasn't really scary at all, in my opinion (and I believe a lot of other people in the room would probably agree) just creepy. Parts of it were actually kinda funny. Maybe it was the atmosphere that made it that way or because it was in Japanese and thus not explained as American movies tend to and maybe it's just that "intrinsically Japanese" touch that outsiders will never understand that lessened the scare-factor.
As for The Grudge, a friend of mine thought it was really scary and wasn't up to watching it again anytime soon. So maybe it's just me. :I

i saw the grudge the night it came out... i thought it was pretty scary, but not as scary as the ring (i was the minority in my group though... most thought it was scarier). I like the way the movie was made to be scary. It's not the kind of scary where things are popping up all over the place, it's the kind where you know something's going to happen and it's just... creepy. Like you see someone rising out of the shadows... they don't just pop up and say boo! It's sorta strage, but I don't really get scared by movies very often. The only kind that really scare me are ghost stories...

The ring was not scary... so she watched a video tape so what... ooh a creepy little girl... oo scary voice on the phone... the movie actually bored me. Of course I'm a raving Romero fan who just loves bloody gory things. *sighs* I want to go to that Tom Savini school... computer animation is no match for true art... *starry eyed*
I haven't seen The Grudge yet but it's one of the ones I want to see when I have the money to actually go out and go to the movies... that one and White Noise. I actually want to see The Grudge BECAUSE it reminds me of Fatal Frame. I loved that game it scared the hell out of me and its sequel was loverly. Which makes me wonder if The Grudge wasn't originally just the Fatal Frame movie that was supposed to be coming out. I haven't heard anything about the original Japanese film. Film makers have said that the only ones doing true horror films these days are the Japanese and with some of the movies I've read about I'd have to agree.
*goes off into lala land where he patiently awaits any information about Romero's Land of the Dead...*

Yeah!! Romero fans unite!! *gives Chris high five*
I agree. I have seen both versions of "The Ring", but I didn't find the films to be scary at all.
"The Grudge" had it's moments, but I didn't find it to be truly scary. It had some jump parts to it, but that didn't leave me with an overall sense of dread.
"Boogeyman" looks like a steaming pile of mooncalf dung to me, but I'm looking foward to seeing "White Noise".
I recently saw "Saw" and I feel that it wasn't a complete waste of seven dollars, but I was expecting so much more. The concept was brilliant, the cinematography was excellent, but the acting was amusing at best, the ending was ridiculous (SPOILER:He had an inoperable brain tumor, yet he managed to do all of this elaborate shit? Ok, they didn't specify whether he was bed ridden or not, but seriously!) and contrary to what the critics said, it couldn't even hold a candle to "Seven" or "Silence of the Lambs". It gets points for being different and I hope this debut will give Twisted Pictures recognition. They show alot of promise.

YES! Someone else who's played Fatal Frame and knows what I'm talking about! Chris, those are exactly the same thoughts that crossed my mind when I saw The Grudge, I wondered if it was the rumored movie that was supposed to come out for the game.
And come to think of it....I definitely did jump in some parts, but....hmm, I guess you could say I didn't get really scared by the movie. More or less, I was just incredibly fascinated by it because of how much it reminded me of Fatal Frame. And since I got creeped out by that game and experienced a lot of the way the Japanese through tense imagery on you, I wasn't as scared. When I went to sleep that night, though, the image of that girl underneath the covers slipped into my mind, and I had to start humming nursery songs to get it out of my head, cause I have a rather large bed and lots of space and shadows in my room.
Chris, did you ever find a way to beat this one ghost that you couldn't destroy by taking its picture? Like, it would just kill you every time you walked into the room. And then a little while later in the game, it just disappeared. My friend and I didn't get much farther past that, cause we rented it and had to take it back, but yeah, the second game was definitely equally creepy. And speaking of which, I had a dream that I was inside of the second game needing to destroy these ghosts, and if you pissed them off bad enough by taking too many pictures of them, they could turn a camera on me and get rid of me, too.
Anyway, sorry, didn't mean to go on about the game, but...that's awesome that someone else has played the game:)

Cally, I saw the trailer to Saw, which doesn't come out here until friggin' end of December! can you explain what the freaky clown face thing is about? I hate clowns and I was happily watching the trailer up until the moment when the clown came onto the screen.
I also saw the trailer for The Grudge. First reaction was "Grrrargh, it's Buffy " and why does she have a bum on her head in the shower scene?!

LMAO! Sure thing. Basically, the killer was hiding out in an old mannequin shop, so he used that freaky clown doll to "deliver" his messages. Apparently, he can control it like a mini-robot and installed a tape player inside it. A hand coming outta her head? Dunno. It guess it's weird.
