"It's damn near freezing in this place," Katharina managed through chattering teeth to Everett, who had miraculously found water for the camel to drink. He sighed and glanced back at her.
"Now you see yet another of the perks of immortality?"
She scowled at him, and he replied with a short, low laugh. "Here," he said, and pulled his black jacket off. He handed the leather to her and she eyed him suspiciously.
"For a kidnapper," she said shortly, "you're very reasonable."
"For a human," Everett quipped, "so are you."
She glared at him, wrapped herself in the jacket, and closed her eyes.
He turned back and said something in Arabic to the camel. The beast eyed him with what seemed like a smile and meandered away. He eyed the sky, judging the time. Only a few hours until daybreak.
Katharina had curled herself into a shivering lump in the sand. Everett smiled helplessly and knelt down beside her. "I can stay with you until morning," he said, and she opened one eye, regarding him.
"If you don't mind," he added, and she shrugged. But when he sat next to her he was pleased to feel her curl closer to him in the darkness.

Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness Scotland
"Warmth," Sondra said, her eyes closed in concentration. "Searing heat, then bitter cold. And a long walk with no humanity in sight."
"Is that all?" Severus grumbled, and McGonagall silenced him with a look.
"The child is doing the best she can."
Albus Dumbledore sighed heavily and looked out over the loch. The water was black and the sky threatened rain. "Somehow he knew we were following."
Abby rolled her eyes, and was surprised when Lestat voiced the opinion that had just run through her mind.
"He is a powerful immortal and a brilliant man. It surprises you that he's on to us?"
Dumbledore sighed. "Not surprises, but disappoints."
Abby eyed the old man, then the older vampire. Under her breath, she spoke to Sondra, who had come up next to her and was also watching the men. " Do you think it's right that we follow them?" she asked, and Sondra eyed her incredulously.
"I mean," she quickly tried to justify, "what if Katharina went with him willingly? What if they'd be happier together without this interference?"
Sondra sighed and shook her head. "I wish I knew," she replied.
As Abby glanced back at the men, she noticed Lestat's eyes on her. In the instant before he turned away, she saw an impressed look flicker behind his silvery eyes.

Somewhere in the Jordanian desert
Sondra Roswin stopped without warning, causing Abby to crash into her. Abby raised an eyebrow at her roommate.
"What's the matter?"
Sondra felt the beginning of a headache seeping through her skull. "Professors," she called, wearily, ahead of her. "Headmaster..."
Albus Dumbledore glanced back from where he had been patiently bargaining with a camel trader. "Yes?"
"Don't bother, Sir," she sighed. "They're on the move again."
Dumbledore cursed softly as he turned to look at the horizon, behind which the blazing sun had just disappeared.
***
Fox Birch eyed the envelope in front of her. She sat at the Gryffindor dining table, her hair pulled back, her fingernails tapping on the polished wood.
"It's about time," she remarked to the black owl that sat, a bit proudly, on the back of the chair next to her. She tore the letter open.
"Dear Fox, This is becoming an honest-to-God wild goose chase. We stopped at Loch Ness. Katharina was already gone, although Sondra insists she saw the monster. Now we're someplace in the desert and Everett's on the move again. Sondra hasn't figured out where they're off to yet. She mentioned another temple or something... oracle maybe? Not sure... anyway, the word python was also being tossed around, which doesn't do my nerves any good. Snape is getting worse by the day. He barely talks, and when he does it's short sentences. He's starting to look so haggard. And the circles under his eyes are terrible. Dumbledore and McGonagall are faring a little better. I think there's a part of them that is enjoying the hunt, as it were... and Lestat? He's so... mysterious. He gets this look on his face sometimes makes me wonder if he knows more than he's letting on. Sondra and I send our love. We miss you loads and can't wait to come home. Love ya!! -Abby"
Fox sighed deeply and folded the letter into a tiny square. Then she turned her eyes back to the Defense Against the Dark Arts text and continued to prepare for her exam.

Delphi, Greece Oracle of Apollo
"I wish," Katharina murmured, more to herself than to Everett, "that just once we could visit a place with a median climate."
He had been staring out over the water, judging how much time they could stay. Now he turned back to her with a distracted look. "Hmm?"
"It's always either freezing or sweltering. It's a little exhausting."
He smiled, barely, and ran his hand absently over the stone pillar he stood against. He didn't respond, and Katharina sighed. "You seem so upset," she mused. "I wish I knew why. You've got what you want, haven't you?"
He rounded on her and she was instantly sorry. Before she could move he was inches from her face, his eyes boring into hers. "You couldn't be more wrong, my dear. I do not have want I want. Do not presume to tell me what I long for, Katharina. If you'll excuse me, I must go hunt." He stared at her for another long moment, and suddenly one hand has tightly around her neck. She gasped.
"Or would you rather I feed on you?"
The points of his teeth raked her skin and she closed her eyes as shudders went down her spine. "Please..." she yelped, "Everett, in Akasha's name..."
As quickly as he'd grabbed her, she was released and she fell to the ground. Her breath was ragged, and when she looked up at Everett, she saw that his was as well.
"I will not torment myself thus," he muttered, and in a gust of wind he had disappeared into the gathering night.
***
Sondra jolted awake. Both hands went to her temples. Thoughts that weren't her own wracked her brain... fury, anguish, resistance, lust.
She moaned and said softly, "I wish he wasn't so da*nably volatile."
"Who?" Abby had woken as well and was blinking sleep from her eyes.
"Everett. On the bright side, he's given away where they are. Good news, Abbs... python wasn't a snake after all."
"No? Oh, thank goodness."
"They're at Delphi, at Apollo's Temple. His priestess, if I'm remembering right, was called The Pythoness, because she worked with snakes when she prophesied."
Abby scowled and closed her eyes again. "Hmph," she mumbled. "There could still be snakes in the area, then, huh? Man, maybe this wasn't my brightest idea after all..."
Sondra snorted at her friend, then rolled over and tried to sleep once more.

Delphi, Greece Oracle of Apollo
Grief is different for each, and so, therefore, were the reactions to the stillness of the former oracle. ...Everett and Katharina, it seemed, were long gone.
Albus Dumbledore became quiet and pensive, sitting on a short pillar before the oracle with his chin in one hand, stroking his beard with the other.
Minerva McGonagall was quite obviously frustrated. Her eyes filled with angry tears as she turned to regard Sondra and Severus, who were, respectively, terrified and furious.
"Do you think this is a game, Sondra?" Snape roared, and Sondra backed up, involuntarily, until she crashed into a pillar and toppled onto her butt.
"Shut UP, Severus!," Minerva screamed, and angrily stared him down. "As if she led us here knowing they'd be gone! Have a little sense, will you? It's obvious these girls are just as upset as the rest of us!!"
Abby was crying. Her frustration was almost more than she could handle. She was worried sick, and she desperately missed Hogwarts... Fox... even her classes. She wished desperately to return, and at the same time had no desire to do so without Katharina.
Sondra had scrambled to her feet from where she'd fallen and glowered at Snape. "I know you're hurt, Professor, but the rest of us are too, and it isn't fair of you to take it out on me!!" She sighed. "I don't like this any more than you do. I show up at empty places and look like a fool... it isn't fun." Her frustration culminated and she managed, "I'm going to cool off for a bit." She shifted into a red-tailed hawk and flew away.
Abby watched her go and sighed. It was then she noticed Lestat had disappeared.
***
"My friend, you ask too much of me."
Lestat arched an eyebrow. "Do you forfeit, then?"
"No, of course not! I never lose, you know that!! That's why I agreed to this crazy game of yours in the first place." Everett balled his hands into fists. "But in Akasha's name, she's exhausted and unhappy. And they’re catching up to us!"
Lestat sighed dramatically. "You‘ll just have to move faster then, won‘t you?"
"Yes, but--"
Lestat held up a hand for silence. "I am deaf to your pleading, Old Friend. If you truly think it best, perhaps you should merely bring her--"
"Back to that school? Never. Da*n it, Lestat, you know she doesn‘t belong there anymore."
Lestat laughed softly. "If I knew that, Everett, I would never have put you up to this."
Suddenly, both immortals stiffened. With frightening speed, Lestat lashed a hand into the surrounding olive trees and pulled out a squirming Abby. His eyes flashed red as he regarded her.
"Meddling brat..." he began, and lunged for her neck.
"Papa!! No!!!" Katharina came crashing into the grove, scratches from the unforgiving branches cutting her arms and face. Lestat blinked, mildly surprised, at his daughter.
"I had assumed," he hissed, more to Everett than to Katharina, "that you were nowhere near our place of conversation."
She didn't answer. She regarded him with a pale face. "Papa? What are you doing here?"
"Do you trust me, Child?"
"I always have, Father. But why--"
"Then do not ask me again.”
“But Papa... now that you’ve found us... can’t I go home?”
Lestat gritted his fangs together and said, “I told you not to ask questions.”
Katharina glanced at her friend, who was quite obviously terrified. "Let her go, Papa. She is my friend."
He eyed Abby, who winced a little, then released her. She tumbled to the dirt and cursed quietly at him before getting to her feet. He ignored her.
"Papa, I still don't understand..."
"Trust me, Child," he said, and kissed her forehead. He returned his gaze to Everett.
"I will reconnect with you soon, my friend," he said, and then took Abby by the hand. "Shall we return, my dear?" he asked.
"You're not giving me a choice, are you?" she retorted.
He laughed softly, shook his head, and pulled her with him. They disappeared into the trees.
