“You're hurting me."
Lestat didn't slow his pace. He gave a low chuckle. "You're mortal. It's expected."
"I said STOP!!!" With every ounce of energy she had left, Abby wrenched her arm from his grip and stood defiantly in place. Lestat ran his tongue over his incisors.
"You are trying my patience and that is very dangerous." His eyes were glowing eerily.
Abby wasn't impressed. "You can't hurt me, though. If you do, everyone will know you did and Dumbledore will burn you alive. And if for some reason they believe it wasn't you, the only other vampire that could possibly have done it would be Everett. That'd foil your little plans too, wouldn't it?"
Lestat threw his head back and laughed. "Gods, I love intelligent women." Abby tensed as she saw him begin to move, but had no time to run before he held her tightly in front of him. He lunged and for the briefest of moments she wondered if she'd been terribly, terribly wrong in her assumptions.
But he didn't strike. Instead, he pressed his mouth to hers and kissed her.
For two full seconds, Abby was stunned into complete stillness. By the time she began to kiss him back, he released her and she stared at him.
With an infuriating arch of his left eyebrow, Lestat took her by the hand and continued to lead her back toward the oracle.

"You can't be serious." Severus Snape looked as if he was close to death. "Albus, for the love of life tell me this is some sort of a joke."
"I agree with him," Lestat put in, and Severus rounded on him, the pain in the professor's eyes too deep for tears.
"It's only reasonable, Severus," Minerva McGonagall said in her no-nonsense voice. "We need more supplies. More food. A change of clothes. It will only take a day or so."
"But returning to the academy is wasting precious time, Minerva. Gods, don't any of you see..."
Sondra and Abby stood quietly away from the professors. Sondra sighed. "I don't think we should go back either. Snape's right. It's wasting time."
"But McGonagall has a point," Abby returned absently. "We need more food. And baths..." she added.
"Severus, I'm sorry, but it is non-negotiable," Dumbledore said finally. He stood and motioned for the companions to listen to him. "We'll return to Hogwarts at first light," he said.
Severus Snape involuntarily put his hands to his face. Every ounce of energy was slowly draining from him. He felt broken. His knees buckled and he dropped to the ground.
Then, in an explosion of fury and pain, his hands in fists, he tilted his head back and screamed at the sky. It was the worst sound Abby and Sondra had ever heard.

Part Eleven Hogwarts Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry
"I've missed you guys so much! Life is so dull here without everybody!" Fox Birch hurried along at Sondra's side.
Sondra grinned and shook her head. "I wish we were staying. My head hurts so bad now that it's constant. And we're all exhausted."
Sondra glanced back over her shoulder. Abby was a few steps behind them, flipping through a large tome on the undead. She looked completely absorbed in her book, and extremely determined. Sondra turned her attention back to Fox.
"You know," Fox said, "I’m finished with exams now. I’m worried about Katharina too. I’d like to join you when you all leave again."
Sondra thought seriously about it. "Actually, that might be kind of nice. It's not easy dealing with four adults at once. Especially when one's a vampire."
Fox glanced over the Hogwarts grounds. The sunlight shimmered over the lake. "Can you imagine?" she said. "Living only at night. That would be so hard."

Somewhere in the Sahara
Katharina wiped the sweat from her upper lip and blinked it from her eyes. She was lucky, she knew, to be untied and allowed this luxury. She silently eyed the men who rode abreast of her. Their faces were hidden from her as was their hair, which each man had covered with a white linen turban.
She closed her eyes against the heat. Upon arriving in Morocco she had been spirited to an Egyptian trader who had clothed her appropriately. Her sandals laced to the knee. Her white linen sheath dress was secured with a belt of carnelian beads. Her hair had been washed and combed, then coiled, snakelike, round her head many times over.
"She will be made into a goddess," Everett had said hurriedly to the trader, moments before sunrise. "More beautiful than Isis and Astarte. And if this is not accomplished you will beg for your life in vain."
The merchant had nodded, making signs against the evil eye with his hands and shaking. When Everett had disappeared underground, the man had turned to Katharina.
"That man is a demon," he said to her in Arabic. "A devil. May Allah protect you, woman." He had handed her a gold ankh on a chain.
Katharina had been fitted with a gold circlet, which now rubbed painfully against her forehead. The ankh was around her neck and a gold snake twisted around her upper left arm. On her left ankle, a gold slave bracelet bangled. Kohl had been carefully applied around her eyes, and golden scarab beetles hung from her earlobes.
She shifted her weight on the pillows that protected her from the rough nature of riding camelback. Even in the thin linen sheath, the heat was unbearable. She wondered if they would stop during the night. Each man had been secured to their camels so as to sleep without the worry of falling. Theoretically, they would be able to ride until Cairo.
She looked behind her to the makeshift gurney that swung between two of the gangly camels. For a moment, she had to shade her eyes. The mummy case was gold, inlaid with lapis and carnelian. Inside, she knew, Everett was completely protected from the deadly sun. It must have cost him a small fortune.
The linen that had been draped over her head threatened to fall and she pulled it back into place. The entire group looked as if they'd been transported from the Thebes of centuries ago. Katharina felt a trickle of sweat slide down the side of her head.
She was beyond caring now, and she didn't move to stop the bead of moisture as it rolled past her neck, over her collarbone, and between her breasts. "Akasha," she whispered into the radiating heat, "I'm so afraid."
The gold of Everett's coffin shone unforgivingly back at her.

Temple of Dendara Egypt
Katharina stood facing the now dry sacred lake, one hand lightly against a large pillar. The rock was cool against her skin, and she found herself once again grateful for the white linen sheath she wore. Later, she knew, she'd feel differently-- the desert became terribly cold at night-- and she watched the sunset with a certain reserved sense of dread.
The many birds that nested in the cracks of Dendara's ancient walls were heralding the coming evening, sending their songs to the pantheon above them. She found herself envying them their freedom.
With a frustrated growl she pulled the gold circlet from her head and cast it away from her, sending it soaring to a stop in the sand of the former lake. She heard the soft noise of its landing even from where she stood.
From behind her came the sound of a man clearing his throat. She didn't turn, refusing to acknowledge the presence of a captor. "Leave me alone," she murmured without turning her head. "Do not come near me again until my Lord wakes for the night."
"But you dropped this."
She turned in frustration and stifled a shriek. She did not recognize the young man... little more than a boy, really... behind her. This would have bothered her much less, however, had she not been able to see through him.
Katharina had dealt with ghosts. Growing up in the Mayfair home of New Orleans, one had to be familiar with the many spirits who still lived in the house. Oncle Julien, especially, had a habit of turning up in the attic. At Hogwarts Academy she had often sat down for tea with Ravenclaw's Grey Lady (whose name was Madelaine) and played chess with Gryffindor's Sir Nicholas deMimsy Porpington. The fact that this boy was dead wasn't what unnerved her. It was the way he stared at her, as if he had seen her before.
"Who are you?" she managed finally.
"You look like my mother," he replied finally, handing her the gold circlet that until now had been gripped in his right hand. "It's your eyes, I think. She used to stand there all the time, looking at the lake. The way you are."
He looked infinitely sad. She felt a rush of pity go through her. He continued, "It's the way you stand as well. Like a queen."
Her curiosity was piqued. The ghost-boy didn't seem eager to harm her. She asked, "You mother was a queen?"
"The last queen," he said. "My half-sister Selene never took the throne. Sometimes I think that if mother had not remarried the whole world would be different. Marcus was the reason the Romans attacked us, in the end."
Everything fell into place. "Your mother was Cleopatra, wasn't she? And your father Julius Caesar?"
He nodded. "I am Caesarion, her eldest son. She and I came here often." He paused and seemed to be listening to the bird songs. "What brings you to this place? You look so sad. What are you thinking of?"
"My teacher," she blurted, and flushed pink. "Well, my... mentor, really. And my caretaker. I miss him." She smiled slightly, thinking of the ridiculousness of the situation. She didn't dare try to explain her situation to a 2000-year-old ghost. They'd be here all night and most of tomorrow.
"Your tutor?" Caesarion nodded. "I too cared very much for my tutor. The closest thing to a father I had. But when mother sent us out of the country for protection from Octavian--"
"He murdered you," she finished. At his surprised nod, she added, "I've studied Egyptian history."
He nodded understanding. She turned back to contemplate the darkening sky. The air already held a shiver of cold.
"Your eyes," he said again from behind her. Her circlet was pressed into her right hand. When she turned to thank him, he was gone.
The sun disappeared beyond the horizon as Katharina turned and entered the temple, to be near Everett's sarcophagus when he awoke.

Casablanca, Morocco
The old city was not nearly as lovely as it had once been, but to the students of Hogwarts Academy, it was perhaps one of the most beautiful places they'd seen.
Fox and Abby stood in the shade of a striped awning, waiting for Sondra to finish bargaining with a vendor. They were covered from wrist to ankle in pastel linen sheaths, and their heads and necks were also hidden in the fabric. Consequently, they were stiflingly hot.
"How long did Professor McGonagall say we had?" Abby asked a trifle absently. Her eye was on a dark haired woman dancing with a snake for a crowd of impressed onlookers.
"I doubt much longer," came Fox's reply. She turned to Sondra and motioned for her to hurry up. Sondra nodded understanding and paid the vendor. She moved toward her friends and showed them her purchase.
"Protection, huh?" Abby said instantly as she saw the silver Eye of Horus on its black cord. Sondra shrugged.
"Well," she said, "There's that too. It's really very lovely."
Fox nodded agreement, and Abby helped Sondra tie the cord around her neck.
"Are we soon ready?" Abby stared out into what looked like a sea of people. "It looks like Dumbledore's found the man he was looking for."
"The carpet dealer?" Fox asked. "Or the camel trader?"
"Some wizard," Abby replied. "Otherwise I can‘t tell. McGonagall‘s waving at us to come and catch up. Snape's soon ready to go, I think."
"I certainly would be," Sondra muttered, "if I were in his situation."
Fox nodded agreement. "He sleeps less than Lestat," he remarked. "Which is impressive in its own awful way. Gods, what'll happen if we DON'T catch up to Everett and Katharina?"
"Don't even think that," Abby said. She gripped Fox’s hand and smiled weakly. "Let's catch up to the professors, shall we?"
