Hmmm, I was wondering if anyone had read any books from A Series of Unfortunate Events Series by Lemony Snicket(aka, Daniel Handler).....and what they thought of them.
I mean, the next to last book has just been released fairly recently called Book the Twelfth: The Penultimate Peril.
I must say that I find his style of writing incredibly refreshing from the other everyday type of styles you get

Since the last book has come out, I was wondering what everyone thought of the mysteries that haven't yet been answered. I guess the question about Beatrice is solved, but what about VFD and the sugar bowl? What happens after Chapter Fourteen?

An interesting question - and one which I think we cannot answer, due to Lemony Snicket winding up all these mysteries so much throughout all the books. I think we might be seeing another book released as a surprise to end the story properly.
To be honest, I was expecting a good ending - I was dissapointed, it wasn't very satisfactory and left many things unexplained.

Oh, I didn't think the Baudelaires were going to be rid of all their problems just like that, so I won't complain about that, but I was really hoping that they would explain what the hell VFD was, because that had been the biggest mystery of all. Snicket does mention that there are no real beginnings and ends, which might be why he didn't want to have everything answered in one go.
I did find out that there is a supplementary book that follows Book 13 called "The Beatrice Letters". I read it, but it didn't really answer that much more.

No, The Beatrice Letters doesn't really fill up any big gaps at all. I reckon he might write another book (he'll probably release it suddenly without any of the pre-release stuff that Egmont usually send) where he explains about VFD etc - but I doubt, as you said, that he'll ever finish one of his books with a: "and they lived happily ever after" - or anything along those lines.

Heh, it's all so X-Files. The promise of answers, then just more weird connections that cause more questions than answers....
I guess I expected that he wouldn't explain the VFD. The sugar-bowl thing struck me as being like the riddle the girl asks the sphinx in Mirrormask. ("What's green, hangs on a wall and whistles?" "I don't know." "A Herring." "A herring isn't green!" "You can paint it green." "A herring doesn't hang on a wall!" "You can nail it up there." "A herring doesn't whistle!" "I just put that in there so it wouldn't be too easy.")
