A new feature we have just activated allows you to rate each other. It's a binary function - you can either "Exalt" or "Smite" each other.
I strongly recommend that we use this to help each other identify more and less helpful members (i.e., if you have reason to believe that someone is behaving in a Bugsylike fashion - sending threatening IMs, net.stalking, or otherwise causing actual discomfort to one of our members - "Smite" that member, so that other members know to steer clear). I, for my part, will be Exalting all our good old regulars, by way of showing how much I have enjoyed and hope to continue to enjoy your company.
As always, if you become aware of someone abusing the system, please notify Zeph or myself. Meanwhile, have fun with this!

Very cute. :-)
But I screwed something up already by clicking without reading. :-(

If you clicked En's, then everything is back as it was.

Yep, thanks Herm. I first saw it in another thread and I though it was something to read, so I clicked on both of them...but I guess I clicked on smite first. Sorry about that. I hope I made up for it, too. It won't happen again.

Hey, that's kind of cool how they have this feature! I'm assuming that all exalts and smites will be anonymous? But yeah, this is an awesome feature and it's a good way to point out people who post things that are positive or helpful.

oh, wow! this is exciting! only downplay--you have to wait another hour to exalt/smite again. bah. question: how does the smiting work? like, if i have, say, 3 karma, and someone smites me, do i then get 2? *shrugs* i'm taking a stab at my own question

I think that's what "smite" is. It's like, "Exalt" is where you rate someone's post as a good or helpful or otherwise positive one, and their karma goes up. "Smite" is where someone has a negative post and their karma goes down. I think the idea is that over time your good and bad karma will even out and people can see if, generally, you're a friendly and helpful member, or if you aren't - Can you get any karma lower than 0?

I think it decreases by two but I'm not entirely sure. En is really the one who came up with this brilliant idea. She'd know for sure. I'll check for you.
In answer to your question Ko, if I recall from my own stab at experimenting , no the number will not go below 0.

Errr. Edit that. I checked and it CAN go under 0. I saw a member who had -1 karma already...
From what I've seen, Karma can only go up and down in steps of 1, right? So for Ice's question, if Ice had 3 karma points and someone smote her, she would have 2.

ahhhhh....i see. ok, another question: is it possible to exalt/smite yourself? ...'cause that would be cheating the system, right?

I don't think you can exalt/smite yourself. Not that I tried but when you are logged in you don't have the option to exalt or smite yourself there.

Oh, thanks for correcting me on that one.
And as Ko said, no you can't smite/exalt yourself. The options won't be visible in your profile.

Hehehe - this is fun. Actually I can't take credit for the idea, because it's a feature that Proboards allows us to enable or disable, but I thought it would be entertaining to watch everyone accrue good karma. Plus - I've never been into banning members, except Bugsy, and I rely on your feedback to find out who's causing trouble anyway, so why not just let them accrue bad karma and let the members observe that and deal with it accordingly? Much more democratic (in the Greek sense, not the American one )
