Oh, how I envy you, Motley. A teacher like Lupin...that's like my dream come true. Lupin seems like the most perfect teacher anyone could ever have. I have to wonder, though...are our lives actually similar to the books, or are we just so obsessed that we distort and look into things so much that it seems that way? But then again, the books have so many realistic themes that it isn't exactly a hard task to find similarities. And I really envy you, pkia. You practically live in the HP's world. Ack, that seems so great. (Am I starting to sound lame yet? : And the "Fred-George" twins in your school seem absolutely hilarious. I've been keeping my eyes open for people like that in my grade...to no avail. haha, that's so cool, Nicky, about winning the house cup, or whatever it's called for you guys. What color were you in, pkia?

*grins* You think my school's freakish-ly Harry Potter like too? I was withholding because I didn't want to list everything. ((Like the guy in the grade below me who looks exactally like the Weasley twins. He's new though, so I don't know what his personality is like. And our Lee Jordan and Draco :)
My house colour is red, my house name is Earn. The brother house is Birch. ((the girls houses are named after Rivers, I believe, and the guys houses are named after trees)) I just find the house thing funny because within the houses, there's something that everyone has in common. Like my house always does best in the sports and get the most points there, another house usually gets the most points in academics. Each of the houses have this weird thing where they share a common personality trait ((or in the case of Yre, pratically everyone minus 5 is blonde. Very weird.))
I don't think that we distort things so that we can find connections, it's just that many of the characters in the books are left open - where there's still room to fit someone else into the role because the character isn't completely developed into an actual "person" yet. Or, where we don't know the people we're connecting the character to well enough, so we can still imagine that they have similar characteristics. Like, Harry's personality is very well developed and I've yet to hear someone make a connection between Harry and someone they know. There aren't many gaps in Harry's personality that you could just ignore when trying to make a connection. Make sense?

It is interesting, now that you mention it, that no one has found someone similar to Harry. I never thought about it like that. Yep, you're very right. The traits that we do know about certain characters are easy to connect to people we know, and we can interpret what we want for other traits. The house thing is so very cool. ;D It's just like Hogwarts. So Earn (red) is the sporty house, Yre is the...blond house...I'm guessing they're not the intelligent house ... so what are the other houses like? after thought: ...You have a Draco too?! Why can't my school have a Draco?

Oh! I can't believe I haven't posted this before!
My old history teacher looks so much like Madam Hooch. The same style of hair the same shaped eyes...Even their personalities are quite similar.
Another thing comes to mind when you mention houses...
My school district has four high schools. There is Fremont High (this is my school and our school color is red), Homestead High (green is their school color), Lynbrook (school color blue) and Cupertino High (color is yellow).
It's very strange when I think about it. Fremont has the color of Gryffindor and yet we are known for our...bad reputation...((All lies though!!! Lies!))Homsetead, our rival school has the Slytherin color and they are supposed to be the good people...((More lies I tell you! -cough,cough-))

I knew it all along!! Gryffindor really is the bad house! But really, that's so cool, Willow. It's quite a coincidence, isn't it? But what exactly do you mean by a "bad reputation"? Ack, ever since I've read HP, I've been wanting to go to a private school. You know, so I can live in the houses and such. You guys are so lucky.

O.o Oy! Willow! You wouldn't want to come play with us in the "Order of the Sphinx" thread about things that come in fours, would you? You could tell us about the reputations of the four schools....
Call me Joseph Campbell, but I think there are some basically similar things that happen to almost every person in the Western industrialised world. I mean, most of the nations people on TD come from have public education, so we've all been to school, which means we've all had teachers and probably had students we did and didn't get along with. And there are always the kids who are quiet and read a bunch, and the knowitalls, and the popular kids, and the precocious kids. So we're all going to see resemblances to Harry's life because he really does have some stuff in common with us.
As for whether we force those resemblances, well, when you get down to comparing particular people you kind of necessarily have to force it by doing what pkia said: filling in the gaps in the character. Is that bad? Actually... I would go so far as to say that making resemblances match up is part of the point of good books. You are meant to see people and situations you know in a book. It's part of how a book affects you, and part of how culture teaches us who we are and how we belong using art.

Heh, oh you know...the obvious things... We are supposedly the school with lots of problems. “Oh no! You are going to Fremont?! I feel soooo sorry for you. How will you ever survive from all the gangs, drugs and bullies! Oh, the horror!” HA! Pathetic…
Honestly, we are a very good school with decent people. Sure we have a few bad students, but doesn’t every school have at least one? I’m proud of our ethnic diversity and our very strange school bond… Unlike other schools, the students of Fremont high stick together. I blame Homestead! They did this to us! Now whenever an ignorant middle school student hear the words “Fremont High”, their faces twist into an ugly frown. Do you sense the strong hate and rivalry between us, huh?
Anyway, I do agree with En. You are bound to find some resemblance in a book with the real world around us.

All you people are so lucky to have such close connections to the school divisions at Hogwarts!! I would love to feel that sort of competition, even though most people would probably say I'm not a very competitive person. (I guess it's just another one of those "grass is always greener on the other side" situations.) The closest thing I have is our school "rivalry" with another school of which I don't even know the location. But our school spirit isn't too bad at all.
Another connection I saw is this one guy in my class named Alex who totally reminds me of Tom Riddle. He doesn't act like Riddle at all, but he is tall with dark brown hair. He also seems to have that charm...at least to me. I never really liked him or anything and he most likely doesn't know my name at all, but I know his name and whenever I pass him, I just have to turn and look. Maybe it's just me, but this guy seems to have the charisma that Riddle should have.

And you are lucky to have found a Riddle in your school. How I’d love to meet someone like Tom…Just the slightest resemblance. –sigh- That would be very nice.
I know these two guys that remind me of Fred and George Weasley. They are simply hilarious! No, they are not twins, much less related in any way and they don’t have the red hair, but they sure are jokesters. Can you believe they are even planning on coming up with the perfect senior prank? I love those guys.

Eh, he really isn't like Tom at all. I just make weird connections in my mind. My friends and I actually met a thespian, though, who really reminded both of us of Tom Riddle. We weren't even sitting next to each other or anything, so we both thought that on our own. That was fun. We also discovered grown-up Draco in that play. Yep, that day was perfect!
Haha, finding the Weasley twins would be awesome. I've been trying to find two people like that, but I've been unsuccessful so far.

Ah, Thespians…How I love them. I’m hoping to be one sooner or later…Which reminds me. I’m going to usher in our high school musical this Friday. Yay! Now back on topic. So you sited both a Tom Riddle resemblance and grown-up Draco in one play? That sure does sound like a perfect day. Again, lucky you.
Yes, finding the Weasley twins is fantastic since they always manage to make me laugh every morning when I see them. Yet I really do want to find a Draco and Riddle like you have.
I have a friend…He is slightly taller than I am (very short, ‘tis I), but at the same time, he’s very tiny. Almost skin and bone! For some reason, he reminds me of Colin Creevey. No, he isn’t as annoying and certainly not a stalker, but he just as a Colin vibe…I’ll think about it a little more.

Hehe, a Colin vibe. That just sounds freaky. Not that it really matters, but does that guy like to take pictures? (I know what you mean by that "vibe"...it's basically the same idea for my Tom guy from before.)
Yeah, I know. That day I went to the play was awesome. Well, actually, it started off really bad for me, but then after the play it was a lot of fun. Teehee, we even went on a search party afterwards and we found "Draco." Hehehe, yes, that worked out just as planned. Well, except for all the squealing.

Actually…he doesn’t. He doesn’t have the Colin personality at all, yet he just seems like a Colin. Yes, this is just like the Tom thing. Though it does get a tad bit annoying when he does that little drool puddle which amuses him so much…Heh, and the belching.
Ooo! A search party just for the grown-up Draco! That sounds like so much fun. I want to do that too…
There has to be at least one Hermione in every school, right? I certainly know of one.

Yeah, that was pretty crazy. We went running around and we tried to get back into the theatre, but the guard person told us that all the actors were already eating lunch. My friend and I sorta hung around the door for some reason, and a couple of seconds later, a guy walks out. Both of us immediately look at each other and whisper, "...Is that him??" It was! It was the guy who looked like, or reminded us of, Draco!! So we followed him and talked to him....it was sooo fun! And then we ran away (sadly, I'm hardly exaggerating) to tell other people. Then the two of us came back with more people and we got his signature.
I really wish I had brought my camera!!!
Hmm, Hermione...I think I'm a lot like Hermione, but not completely (for example, I don't like talking and showing off that I know things, like she does). In truth, I would be a combination of various different characters, including her.

Endless giggling as well? I would have done so, or at least just when he wasn't looking. Oh! Did he act like a Draco at all? -squeals- You are so lucky! You Got His Signature?! Ack! Did he give you an odd look before he gave it to you, or just smile and sign? I'm getting so worked up about a complete stranger! I feel way too girly right now...Oh well. -shrugs-
Then I think you are more of a Tom... Yes, you are the girl version of Tom Riddle...and other characters, as you put it. Teehee...
