Drei Besenstangen Tirgoviste, Romania
"I want to go home."
At Fox's quiet remark, Sondra sighed and buried her head in her hands. "I'm sorry," she said. "There's nothing. It's like they've both just disappeared."
Abby set mug of cocoa on the heavy wooden table and stared disconsolately into the fire. It was after midnight. Albus Dumbledore had long since gone to bed, with Minerva McGonagall not far behind him. Lestat had left to hunt the surrounding area, and Severus Snape sat morosely in an armchair close to the fireplace. Across from the fire, a bartender was cleaning out mugs from the day’s business and humming to himself. The three students, dwarfed by the large, overstuffed chairs they sat in, were cold and exhausted.
And Sondra had been unable to track either Everett or Katharina for almost two days.
Abby tapped her fingers on the hard wood of the table. “I just don’t understand this whole business,” she said, and the other two girls shrugged their agreement. She continued, “I mean, why should Everett take her from Hogwarts if she’d already agreed to marry him? It was only a matter of time before she was all his. Why do this now?”
Fox opened her mouth to reply, but it wasn’t her voice that answered.
“Everett didn’t want her at Hogwart’s in the first place,” came the smooth voice from behind the girls. “Everett doesn’t appreciate the inner beauty of an intelligent woman.”
As one, the three girls whirled around to see Lestat leaning against the wall, his arms loosely crossed. Fox scowled. “Do you have to sneak up on us like that?”
Lestat shrugged. “I had no intention of startling you.”
With a sigh, Abby said, “What were you saying about Everett?”
Lestat moved forward, god-like in the firelight. As she watched, Sondra could easily see how he could hypnotize the unwary. He sat in one of the nearest armchairs, glancing at Severus as he did so. The professor didn’t acknowledge the look.
“Everett Sarandon is one of my proudest, most dangerous fledglings,” Lestat murmured, almost to himself. “My original intention was to marry Katharina to him because I knew he would provide for her. And she had no objection to the idea.”
Abby scowled. “Did you give her a chance?”
“Although I appreciate questions at the right moment, this is, I’m afraid, not that moment,” Lestat continued without a pause. Abby crossed her arms, and as she did so noticed that Snape had closed his eyes.
Lestat said, “I believed, and still believe, they can grow to love each other.” He paused, and Sondra noticed he didn’t wear the self-assured look he usually did. He continued, “Everett swore to me he would care for her once she was in his charge--” There was a loud noise as Severus Snape’s boots hit the floor and he stood. He turned to Lestat and growled, “So did I.”
Lestat seemed mildly surprised at Snape’s outburst. He extended a long-fingered hand to the professor. “My friend...”
Severus held up a hand and said, “Enough.” With a furious stare from cold, black eyes and a swirl of his cloak he stalked toward the door that led into the night.
“Severus! Stop!”
With one hand on the wooden handle of his broom and the other on the brass handle of the tavern door, Severus turned to face Minerva McGonagall, who was standing on the stairs that led to the rooms above. The entire room had stopped with him; the girls barely breathing and Lestat having stood to call his friend back. Even the barkeep had stopped in the midst of drying a mug.
McGonagall had taken off her makeup for the day, and for the first time since Fox had met her, the woman looked old and exhausted. There were dark circles under her eyes and her mouth was tight with worry. Severus glared at her. “Yes, Minerva?”
“Are you mad? It is the middle of the night.”
With a look that made Sondra shudder, Snape made a small mock bow to McGonagall. “Thank you for that observation, Minerva. Will there be anything else?”
She glowered at him. “Sit down and act your age, for heaven’s sake. It’s freezing out there and looks to be ready to snow. Where can you possibly go?”
Snape bared his teeth. His voice was barely his own as he spoke, “I will no longer sit here and wait. This girl is under my protection.” His eyes became pleading, desperate. “I promised her, Minerva.” Without another word, he threw open the door. Already the snow clouds were gathering in the northern sky.
Minerva cried after him, “Severus! What are you going to do?!”
A feral smile crossed his face as he sat astride his broom. “I’m getting reinforcements,” he called back, then kicked off from the ground and was soon out of sight.

Poenari Castle, Romania
It was nearing sunset. Already the moon, which was nearly full, hung in the sky. Katharina held her nearly useless hands in her lap, watching the horizon line, waiting for the sun to descend completely out of sight.
Of the men that Everett had hired to help with this leg of their journey, only one remained awake and alert. He was young, although certainly older than she, and his hair was a golden blonde that reminded her of her father's. He looked exhausted, and rightly so: the climb to the castle had taken them hours, Everett’s sarcophagus greatly slowing the progress. Her legs were terribly sore, and she was sure most of the hired men felt the same.
She tried to stand, wobbling on unsteady feet that had not been used for the better part of an hour. And as she stood, an idea slowly crept into her mind.
The silence of the fading day was broken by a sharp cry of pain as Katharina fell to the floor. The young man, who had been expressly told of his responsibility to see that this young woman was kept from all harm until the master awoke, scowled at her. "What's wrong?"
"My foot," she explained, grimacing. "I've been sitting for so long, I think I twisted something..."
When the young man bent to look, Katharina sharply kicked him, hard, in the jaw. He was unconscious even before his head hit the floor.
She watched him for a moment, breathlessly, feeling a stab of guilt at the knowledge that Everett may very well punish the man for her escape.
“I’m sorry,“ she whispered. “I didn’t really have a choice...“
Then she turned and, ignoring the pain in her hands, ran as fast as she could down the spiraling stairs to the ground floor of the castle.

Rue's not kidding... loads of twists and turns. I think it's awesome how you've been writing other people into the story, too. Did you and Sondra talk through what you were going to put in about her or were you just writing from the old rp's?
At least this finally answers the question I've been pondering for two years, which is, how you got engaged to Snape of all people But then, your Snape in this story is much less... snarky than the one Harry perceives, which is probably fair

The last time I heard from darling Kath was in.... November, and she was starting up a fire troop with a group of friends from Faire. I haven't seen her online or got a call from her since then. Either she's insanely busy at the Salon/Jewelery store, or on the road.

Hi guys.
Okay, I've been insanely busy, and I know I've left you all hanging, and I am really sorry. I turned 21, got a new puppy, started working 40+ hours a week, and moved in with my boyfriend in a two month span of time.
Then, to make things interesting... my dad announced that he was having an affair with my mother's best friend, and was leaving me and Mom for this lady.
Yay.
But this is good news for you guys, because anger and hurt, as most of you know, is good fuel for writers. My plan is as follows: I am copying this story onto my word processor tonight. I will be finishing it. Hopefully soon. Then I will be starting the sequel, which I have already dreamed up and is shaping into more of a sappy romance.
That's the master plan, anyway. So fear not faithful (and always appreciated) fans!! The story is soon to come to a conclusion... as soon as I figure out what that is...
Yours lovingly, Katharina Lioncourt Slytherin Alumni

Sondra Roswin had fallen asleep in front of the fire, and she was having a terrible dream.
On the cold stone floor of a castle, a young man with shining blonde hair was waking into a nightmare. He clambered to his knees as his master faced him. In the cold air, Sondra could see the man’s breath steam from his open mouth.
"She overpowered me... outsmarted me... it happened so fast, My Lord..."
There was a cruel laugh. Everett's smooth voice purred, "Overpowered by a woman? That‘s very funny, Marcus."
Sondra felt the back of her neck prickle at the blind fury behind Everett’s calm demeanor. The young man replied quickly, “It’s true, Sir, I swear it...”
Moving faster than Sondra had ever seen, the young man was pulled to his feet by an invisible hand and thrown against the nearest stone wall. She could hear his ribs crack like breaking twigs as he hit the ground. She started shaking, desperately wishing she could wake up and at the same time knowing this was no dream. Again, Everett's voice murmured, "I am truly sorry, Marcus, but it seems I have no more use for you."
As if in slow motion, Sondra watched Everett’s right hand make a twisting motion. She heard the anguished scream, heard the wet, ripping noise, saw the man’s throat be torn from his neck... found herself staring at a gurgling, gaping hole and a ruined body’s mouth forever in a grimace of pain. Everett waved his hand dismissively and the body soared over the castle wall.
Sondra shrieked at the top of her lungs... ...and awoke to Abby shaking her. "Goodness, Sondra... you were crying in your sleep. What's going on?"
As Sondra focused her vision, she said, "The good news is, Katharina's escaped. The bad news is... I think Everett's going to kill her."
