Add "some new guy" to that list, Rubes.
Oh wait. On Rowling's site, in the Rumours section, doesn't it say that Harry isn't Dumbeldore? (And also that Harry isn't Voldemort, in case someone's thinking about bringing that up somewhere?) (I would check now, but my computer...you know. : I guess Rowling already figured people would start making crazy theories.
Rita! You're going to London, too? Bring me, bring me! ...Oh fine. At least promise you'll bring me back either Jude or some HP actor? That would be lovely. Have fun watching PoA and visiting London, dear.

Is anyone else just a little peeved that there's no "of" in this title? The first book didn't have one.I don't wish it will be the Creeveys either, they're not what you might call my favourites. I agree! If it were Remus it would be sooo cool! Though I fear he could die. There's always been a death of some kind in each book. I don't want him to die! Then if he dies what? Peter will avenge all their deaths or something? Hmmm...would make sense, getting him to his senses a bit and back to the good side. Except that I hate Peter Pettigrew!

Hmm...something tells me it isn't Hagrid. He's a half blood alright, but the other half of him is giant, and...I dunno. I don't know if it's going to be anyone we really suspect, because you know how JK Rowling never fully leads us on, even in her books.
I'm gonna have to go read Chamber Of Secrets again now to get my brain thinking...

Yeah, probably you're right. Personally I wouldn't like a whole book based on him either. Now if it were on Lupin on the other hand.......maybe we'd get to know some more on the Marauders, and on Lily and James story, which could link to the prophecy so we learn in what way they defied Lord Voldemort 3 times.
I still need to finish reading LOTR, then I can read COS.

ok all. how about Riddle? anyone think he'll ever come back? i mean, he was in COS, and he IS a half-blood... wait. why are people calling harry a half-blood? i mean, his mum was a witch and his da was a wizard!...perhaps because his mum was Muggle-born? Definitely not the Creeveys. pft. i would hafta die. Hopefully not Hagrid. i dont think giants would be that appealing... Remus. Ah, yes. I pray it is him! He needs to come back! Grr! Bring Sirius back! he must come back! Was he a half-blood? Think think think. it has to do with COS, JKR said so. she said that some of the stuff in HBP was originally sposed to be in COS and vice versa...so context clues! Look look look!!! (sorry, a bit hyper) Release dates, anyone?

I know PS didn't have an 'of.' The point was that all of the books except the first and last would have an 'of.'
(Tom Riddle and Voldemort and pretty much the same person, and Rowling already said the HBP isn't Harry or Voldemort.)
I don't think the HBP necessarily has to be someone from CoS. It was just one of her working titles for CoS. Maybe Rowling was thinking about introducing the character who would be the HBP in CoS but didn't. Or maybe it just relates to a theme from CoS. We really don't know. (The latter does seem more probable, since CoS was all about the "importance" of blood.)
Ice, Harry is considered a half-blood because his mother, like you suspected, was Muggle-born. Even though both his parents were magical, Lily's background was not. Again, it's all in the blood.
Sirius, however, was not half-blood. The Blacks are very much a pureblood family. (Remember the family tapestry in 12 Grimmauld Place?)

Well it could be Riddle. Think about it. Why would JK have made Dobby say that Riddle was not Voldemort? The way she put it there, it's like they weren't the same. There are some differences. I mean, Riddle, an orphan child, who still carried his father's name whom he loathed, striving for power, but not having much.
Then you have Voldemort. Even villian, who killed his father for revenge on what he did to him, arisen once more at full power, known by the whole magical community as well as some Muggles. I think it could be Riddle.

We think that only because he's a prime candidate that fits the description of a half-blood of which we see has the potential to fit the role of prince. And in a sense, I guess I can see how it might be Riddle, because that would be a clever thing for J.K. Rowling to do, using the person Voldemort used to be, but....I still say it's not Riddle. I think silver hit the mark, actually. CoS was about the value of purebloods and half-bloods. If there's any connection, I think blood is it. Hasn't that been rather important in Voldemort not being able to touch harry? well, not because of his personal blood, per say, but what was put in it....

Well yeah, that would bring the connection of this prince who is a half-blood. So, if what you're saying is right, that would mean that it could be anyone from the other books, with the possiblity of there being a new character, who might be it.

ah yes of course. Sirius is pure-blood. i've forgotten everything in the 5th book (besides *sigh* sirius's death) because i'm rereading the series thus far. (i'm in the second task currently. good point. but then again, JKR did, as Cherry so cleverly pointed out, have Dobby say that he wasnt Voldemort. Sooo.......Riddle may still be a posibility. but...he was demolished in COS. no memory is left of him as far as we know so should he be kept on the HBP list or not? hmm...ya know what would seriously stink? If the HBP is a new character. i mean, we're all racking our now-shriveling (well, mine is anyways... : brains to try and figure this out. that would suck. woah. what if the Half-Blood Prince really isnt half-blood? the person who crowned him prince could have mistaken his or herself completely. something to think about... goodness. i'm gonna go flip thru the pages and find some possibilities.

The more I think about this, the more I'm startign to convince myself that what Moira said is probably the connection with COS and not the character.
I hope it's now a new character, not after all this debating and all!

Here I am, just like I promised. Yeah, so here are the comments I read on that site in Hermy's sig. These first ones have to do with possible candidates for the HBP...we didn't even consider these people. (This is going to get really long; sorry, but I just love reading interesting theories...)
Well, why was Mark Evans brought up in OotP? (I really hope Rowling answers that FAQ poll...and not some cheap, generic "I can't tell you that..." : And why does he just happen to have the same name as Lily? It seems too suspicious to me. You guys noticed it, too, right as you were reading OotP. There's gotta be something there, right? And it could connect to the importance of green eyes, too, if the guy is indeed related to Lily.
I also like the Seamus point; never even thought of that. It would be sorta awkward to give Seamus such an important role right now, though. The Weasleys getting a bigger role, however, makes perfect sense.
Or we can go in a whole different direction like some of those last people and take it not-so-literally. These theories definitely widen the possibilities.

I've been checking on their discussions, but some of the stuff we were talking about here, and they do post a lot seeing as they have a greater number so it's hard to catch up with them at times.
But don't you think that maybe JK put that sentence in the book for this reason? To make us think that Seamus could be? She had the books planned out already when she started writing PS.
And Mark Evans could be for the same purpose. The arouse suspicion and rumours among the fans. To make you think one thing, and then it's totally insignificant. Besides, we know Mark Evans doesn't have magic blood because it was clearly stated that none in Harry's area had magic blood. Unless he lives in some other area or something. Man I'm confusing people now.

What do you mean by 'Mark Evans has the same name as Lily'? or am i just getting confused in all this hullibaloo? well yeah, she did have the books planned out and everything, but what if she added that sentence just to inform the reader when she was typing it up? True, they did say Harry James (*snort* i never knew his middle name : Potter is the only wizard in that vicinity...??!!??!!
