I've been really lucky. I've caught a lot of really good concerts-- Bob Dylan, Zwan, Ben Kweller, The Datsuns, and most recently, Spoon.
I started thinking about how much fun I've had at all of them, and how I've never really attended a bad concert. I had the most fun when I saw the Datsuns, Dylan put on the best show, but my favourite would have to be Zwan. And I got to wondering what concerts everyone else has been to.
Who played when and where? Did you cry or laugh or just completely enjoy yourself? Were you lucky enough to meet your artist of choice after the show?
Last night I caught Spoon when they played at Nita's Hideaway. Even though the air conditioning was broken (ugh, 105*, ugh), they put on a really great show, played all of my favourite songs, and I connected with the lead singer (Britt Daniels). He even blew me a kiss. ;D

Okay, folks. Take a seat and brace yourselves; this could take....about a minute. So I'm not that big of a concert person, probably because I don't really care that much for all the music of bands that actually tour and I also hate spending my money. But my concert list reads like this: about 1988 - Tiffany (eighties pop-princess) at Westbury Music Fair in Long Island, NY. My best friend, Kelly, and I were kind of into Tiffany (of course we always liked Debbie Gibson a ton more ) and she happened to be having a concert near where we live. So our moms got tickets and her mom, my mom, my older brother, maybe KG (?) and Kelly and I went. We liked the opening act but they looked like a bunch of elementary school kids. We thought their name was New Kids Around the Corner ( ) but we soon found out otherwise. The concert was forgettable except for the fact that Tiffany went into the crowd at one point and she ruffled my brother's hair and he touched her wrist and later told us she felt so thin he figured she was anorexic. sometime in the late eighties/early nineties - New Kids on the Block. I saw them three times. Once at Giants Stadium (yep, my mom drove my family and Kelly's family to another state to see them ;D) and twice at Nassau Coliseum (home of my New York Islanders! ). The first time I saw them at the Coliseum it was actually being shown live on Pay-Per-View so we taped it and you could hear us at the very end (like when everyone else had left the place) screaming "MOM!!!" trying to get Kelly's mom's attention. Honestly, though, all three were great concerts and I loved the group so much that I felt like breaking down in tears at the sight of them. I'm sure I actually would have if I wasn't so self-conscious. 1996 - Don't know if this counts, but I saw Cavern in concert at a book store. Cavern is a Beatles cover band and they actually wear Pepper suits and stuff. It was completely awesome and the closest to an actual Beatles concert that I'll ever get. They did trivia afterward so of course we all walked away with prizes. Unfortunately, it was one prize per person max., so we started giving answers to other people. ((Pop quiz: What's the longest title of a Beatles song? Answer at the end of post. ) May 14 and 18th, 2003 - Yep...Dashboard Confessional. ;D ;D So these were solo Dash concerts, which means just Chris, a guitar, a stool, and a roomful of faithful followers all belting out every single word of every single song. It was beautiful. It was amazing. I'll probably never experience anything like it again. I wish I'd gone to more of the solo shows, and if he ever tours that way again I'll be there in a heartbeat. Amazingly, I also got to meet Chris after both shows and he was completely sweet and an all-around great guy. Here's a shameless pic of him from after the first show (yes, I posted this before but as I cut myself out of the pic I'm sure you'll all survive seeing it again ): Yeah, so, that's it. I'll be seeing Dash again (with the band this time) in September and hopefully that'll be great. I have the ticket stubs from the Tiff and NKOTB shows and articles about the NK ones, but those are all packed away. Still nice to know I have them, though. ((Trivia answer: Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey. I really like this song, too. ;D ))

It is 10 AM right now in NJ. an hour later i'll be going over to a freinds house from which we shall depart to our first ever Iron Maiden concert... their touring with DIO and Motorhead... right now i'm in this surreal calm state, almost like i haven't even comprehended that i'm going to see Iron Maiden. its gonna be awesome! Iron Maiden was my first love. i picked up a tape of theirs, 'best of the beast' at a store because of a freinds recommendation. that was in 7th grade in Hungary. i still have the tape, the roll of tape has snapped in 4 places, i've tapped it together, i listened to it so much and everytime i listen to it all these memories just flood my head. i mean the lyrics are just monster ballads, but the music itself...
this is going to be my first "big" concert, with lots of people. i've gone to Dar William (lot of fun) and Susane Warner (amazingly cool woman) with Gen and Rue. those were just small gatherings of people listening to good music with the artists getting to know the audience really well. i've also gone to some underground punk concerts, which are a lot of fun, they leave you completely exhausted. its a lot of simple, loud music and constant moshing, and you go home with that ringing in your hears ;D with may dad i've gone to jazz and classical concert (lots of diversity for me, i might even go to a hip-hop concert in the near future) these kind of concerts are all about just sitting down and immersing your self in the music.
My favourite kind of concert... its probably between the small folk concerts and going to a jazz club. both involve relaxing yourself and listening to good music. i'll post about the Maiden concert, i'm getting chills..

Wow, Izz, Tiffany and New Kids on the Block? That's so rad. Seriously. I'm huge NKOTB fan. Sadly, I was born too late.
Oooh, laci, I can't wait to hear about Iron Maiden and Dar. ;D They're both going to be awesome, I'm sure.
This Saturday I'm going to try and make it to the Aquabats show (think Tenacious D, except ska). I saw them once before, last March with Save Ferris, and I'm really excited to see them again.
I'm also going to go to David Gray with my sister, Kati, on August 8th at Dodge Theatre. It's going to be a great show, I have a friend who just caught him in Pittsburgh, and said it rocked. I'm kinda disappointed that it's not at a more intimate venue. I've gotten too used to being able to sit on the stage and talk to bands after their sets.

Aw, poor Gabi. Yeah, I still love New Kids in a nostalgic kinda way (especially Joe ). I know what you mean about being born too late...I was born about 25 years to late. I was meant to be around for the Beatle years. *sigh* How amazing would that have been? On a side-note, and since I try to work Dashboard in whenever I can, I was notified today that they're going to be on Last Call with Carson Daly (yuck) on August 6th and their looking for diehard fans for the audience. So of course I registered for it and hopefully I'll get picked. That'd be awesome.

hmmm, concerts--- well, I saw Herman*s Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Barry Manilow, John Denver (twice), the Beach Boys, Kenny G (once with Michael Bolton), Bon Jovi, Black Crows, Charlotte Church, Yanni--that*s all I can remember, but I*m sure there are more...oh, oh--the Monkees and Jimmy Hendrix--forgot them..and, wow, the Rolling Stones
The Beach Boys was the most fun as everyone sang along and tossed beach balls around the civic center. and the Rolling Stones at the Aloha Stadium--totally awesome. the Yanni concert was so loud--loved it...the Black Crows was the worst as it was my first stand-up concert and my oldest (in high school at the time) and I got separated--everyone was drunk and still drinking (loved the way our bags were checked for cameras but not for alcohol) and when I checked my discarded jeans the next morning, they were still soaked with beer...and I wasn*t drinking..

Ooo, Izz, good luck. I hope you get picked.
I got an e-mail from the Rooney street team people, they wanted me to be there when Rooney played on that new Pepsi show on the WB (can't remember the name, but the Ataris played a little while back ;D) but it's in LA, so poor underage Gabi doesn't get to go. Which is a bummer, cos I have such a thing for the Schwartzman brothers.
Wow, guin, you've been really lucky. The Monkees are a favourite of mine, I have a huge crush on the late sixties Davy Jones. And Hendrix is a classic, of course.
When did you see Bon Jovi, though? In their hair-days, or more recently?
And laci, don't keep us in suspense... how was Maiden?

I've only been to three concerts ... yet. *devilish smile*
Backstreet Boys when I was 11 ( ), Travis and *sigh* Placebo.
The Travis one was cool, because the pavillion was nearly empty... though it was kinda bad for them, it was excellent for me because there was some sort of familiar ambient around the thing. It was pretty cool.
But Placebo!!! ;D ;D I wrote about it somewhere, I'll go find it and copy paste it. I don't feel like repeating myself right now because I'm too busy remembering the wonderful days in England.

I took my oldest to see Bon Jovi in the late 80*s I think..and it was indeed a scary concert. It was held at the Pensacola (Florida) civic center and because it had less than the required seating, it was an open seating concert--meaning first come first served. We lined up at the doors and when they opened, there was this mad rush to get in. We were carried with the crowd. There had been a lot of drinking while everyone waited and there were a lot of broken bottles on the walkway... once inside, we grabbed seats up in the second level and found that the "no smoking" law was ignored (the place had a "cloud" covering and it reeked) as was "no sitting in the aisles"..I remember thinking that if a fire broke out, we were doomed. But aside from all that.. , it was a great concert...with Bon Jovi himself rising from the floor..and at one point walking above us on this ladder/walkway system. We don*t get the concerts here (Hawaii) that I expected tho daughter #2 saw Alicia Keyes in a club concert..and she saw Boys to Men...daughter #1 saw Hootie and the Blowfish. No Doubt was here and I missed that--sorry I did..Whitney Huston, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey..all played at the stadium, so I guess we DO get a lot of concerts now that I reminesce.....

well, best concert ever? yeah probably, whew... well we got there at 6:30 and already it just felt right, everyone hanging out at their cars in the parking lot, listening to maiden, drinking beer, and getting ready for the show. i got my maiden tour t-shirt, and went into the outside- auditorium and took my seat, getting ready. Motorhead opened and well... i could have done without it. it was way too loud, i didn't understand a thing, i clapped for them because they did originate speed/thrash metal but it was pretty bad. Dio came next, and they put on a surprisingly good show.
Finally, IRON MAIDEN came on, the place erupts, i'm in the 50th row but i can see everything great. oh man, they did a lot of classic maiden, stuff from the 80's, like trooper, hallowed be thy name, and so forth. they even played a new song off their new album which comes out in september. hafway through the show, Bruce Dickinson goes off on this rant about the mother f***** market weenies and about fake, trashy pop music, in this high pitched british accent, it was great. so then its over at 12 and i feel great, except for the fact that i don't have a voice, and my neck is killing me from all the headbanging, it still hurts. me and my freinds of course dressed up in nice tight jeans, white tennis shoes, and our maiden shirts, unfortunately, we didnt't have wigs but we still looked pretty hot, yeah the chicks were diggin' us ;D. so yeah, awesome concert, i went and gave blood the next day, so i'm completely pooped. that night i dreamed that i actually met the band members, it was excellent

Ahh, that's the Bon Jovi I would have liked to have seen. I think that everybody likes "Dead or Alive" whether they admit it or not.
That reminds me when I saw the Slackers. They rocked, and did a cover of that. Ska shows are always really fun, though.
Rita, I love Travis. I'm really jealous of you. And I read that you're going to see the Datsuns at that festival. They are soooo good. I saw them last month and got my shirt signed. And I shook Phil Datsun's hand. ;D
Ahh, laci, that sounds so much fun. The jealousy is too great. They're stopping here in late August, I'm going to work on going.

So here's what I wrote about Placebo's concert:I called Li when Placebo started playing "The Bitter End". She said that in the beginning she only heard screaming and an infinitive buzzing but then she hard Brian Molko's voice and went almost as hysterical as I was. She said she heard me screaming. She also said that she was jumping on her bed while listening to it and that her mother suddenly came in the room.
That concert was so amazing *sighs* You get so sad during the days after you went to the concerts, don't you? You just feel like part of you's still there.
I had Brian Molko one meter away from me. It was like this:
He was singing this cover of a Pixies song which name I don't know. He then climbed this huge column of amplifiers and sound columns to reach the right side of the upper level, so that the people who weren't in the arena could see him near too. He stayed up there for a while, but my side started screaming because we wanted him too. Me most of all *cof cof* He then climbed down those columns and came back to the middle of the stage. We all said something like "...forget it." But then he turned to us... climbed the columns in our side, and as soon as [I'm getting excited writing this] I knew it he was in front of me. Brian Molko. I mean, friggin' Brian Molko. It was so wonderful. João was in the "front row" and I was glued to him so I was in the middle of the first and second row. But, moving on. Brian continued singing and looking at us all, smiling, he gave this one girl the microphone so she could sing too but she didn't know the lyrics, then he started singing again and he leaned forward so we could touch his hand. I leaned forward too but João was in front of me. João touched him TWICE. Not fair. But then he continued there. In front of us. And I was smiling so broadly, and then he saw me and he smiled too. I mean, he smiled TO ME. He stayed on top of those columns 'till the song was over. It was so wonderful. Specially for me, because I've liked Placebo ever since Without You I'm Nothing came out, and Brian Molko was always that idol... I wouldn't call him an idol, but it's the only word that occurs to me right now.
*sigh* I got hysterical while writing that.
Apart from the fact that it wasn't a Pixies song but "Teenage Angst" that was the best moment of the concert. And the Pixies song is amazing. "Where Is My Mind" to anyone who's interested.
I'm going to see them again this August 19th along with other great names of the musical world. I mean, not great but cool. Oh shut up Rita, PJ Harvey's amazing. Anyway, yeah.

PJ Harvey is amazing. Her and Bjork did this cover of the Stones "Satisfaction" that rocks. And Rita, if you like PJ Harvey, check out this band Eisley.
I saw the Aquabats last night. It was skank-tastic. ;D They had four openers: Mourning Maxwell, Bad Credit, Fairview, and The Reunion Show, who were all pretty good. It was super-hot again (damn these crappy little clubs) but I skanked and I moshed and had a lot of fun. If you ever want a concert that makes your sides ache from laughing, the Aquabats are it.

Well, when I was little...maybe six or seven? I went to go see Alabama with my mother who is a big fan of them. I don't remember much other than my mother telling me not to talk to the drunk man beside us and my mother got to talk to them afterwards and I thought it was very boring and couldn't figure out why she was so excited.
A few years ago..1999...1998 maybe? I went to an nsync concert with my sister and had a horrible time and I read my book a good majority of the time.
For the past couple of years I have gone to the DC101 Chilli Cook-off, and I've seen like 3 Doors Down, Carbon Leaf, Something Corporate, Puddle of Mud, Everclear, Blink 182...stuff like that. I've seen Guster and Ben Folds and Carbon Leaf and Something Corporate in their own concerts and Foo Fighters two years ago.
I don't know, I've been lucky in going to concerts because I've lived near DC for a while and so it makes it easy, super easy to see concerts. And you can usually get pretty good prices if you go to the 9:30 Club. And then, like a lot of local bands because every kid here, I swear, is in some sort of band. A lot of jazz bands too, like Inner Rythm. But I don't know if they count.
I love going to concerts. I love being around people who are enjoying the music.

Awww, Leni. I've always wanted to go to a Backstreet Boys concert, just to see what all the teenyboppery hype is about.
The very first concert I went to (and paid money for) was Richard Marx when I was like, 12 or something. It was alright, because it was in Hong Kong and the crowds there are really... tame. Oooh, and last year I went to see Robbie Williams (I'm not really into the music as much as some of the other people there, but he's an amazing entertainer) and yeah. I went to a festival called Big Day Out- Foo Fighters headlined it, but there were lots of other rock/alternative bands there, those who now escape my memory (I'll get back to you on that one- it was a fantastic lineup).
I really wanted to see the Chilli Peppers and Jamiroquai when they were here- my friend and I both were like, "hey, let's go see (band)" but we never got tickets in time.
I got asked to see Marilyn Manson- the show's on in September I think, but I don't really want to (I can't justify forking out that much money for something I don't really want to see THAT much). so- does anyone know a nice way to squirm out of going to a concert that your friends really, really, really want to see and want you to go along?
