All right, so Dashboard is playing a big show tomorrow night and I couldn't come up with money for tickets. *sigh* I keep telling myself it's too hot (they're playing an outside venue) and I'd rather see an acoustic show, but whatev. I wish I was going.
However, I'm pretty stoked about upcoming shows: Piebald with Appleseed Cast, Modest Mouse, The Datsuns with The Von Bondies and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ani (w00t!!!), Dave Matthews Band, Curefest (The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture, Melissa Auf Der Mar, Cursive, Muse, Thursday), Incubus with the Vines, and the Pixies (who, rumour has it, Death Cab is opening for (it'd be my third time seeing them ;D)). We'll see if I can make it to all of them, but if I can, you'll be sure to hear about it.

Oh man, Gabs... I wish I was that lucky, we never get any good shows here, not really. Except... well, you probably have never heard of them, but Mago de Oz might come in November... They're cool. I hope I can go. One of my friends asked if I'd like to go, of course I would... Plus, their new bass player's amazing. Might learn something from watching if I'm close enough. *EDIT* 'Neko, Blink came here in April. All the crazy teeny boppers were excited, I didn't really wanna go, I mean, I like only about 3 or 4 songs now... not like 2 or 3 years ago... I however, was amazed to learn Travis played with his broken leg. Like they say... The show must go on.

Tuesday night I'm going to go see Rush in concert and am very, very excited. Even though they're an "old" band and everything, I can't wait and have had their songs stuck in my head for weeks now!

I can't go see this year's Projekt: Revolution due to 3 reasons:
1. Absolutely no moolah for some tickets 2. Damn concert's up in Phoenix. I hate living here in Tucson!! 3. It's in the middle of the week, September 1st to be exact. That would've been an amazing early birthday present for me.
*sigh* Guess I can just remember last years P:R I went to...

So, last night I went to a show that left me apatic, I still have my moments of transe today. The show was none other than VELVET REVOLVER, a band formed by elegible members with a vast and powerful career behind them: three members from Guns'n'Roses, including the legendary Slash, the incredible Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and a guitarist that used to play for Dave Navarro. So, all of them with some sort of experience that puts lots of these little bands to shame.
They only have on album to date, Contraband, so I wasn't expecting too much, since I even think the songs are a bit repetitive. But part of me knew that live their sound would be too powerful for me to miss, and I had to see Scott Weiland. So I went. And did I regret it? No way.
I almost fell asleep during the opening act, a Swedish band called Backyard Babies. The first songs were OK, were good for a bit of warming up, but then the warming up died away, you could see that in the whole crowd, who even stopped moshing around. I even took the chance to go to the bathroom during their performance. So yeah, it wasn't that powerful. A bit too punk and repetitive for my taste (although they had an awesome style). But after what looked like 40 minutes they went offstage, lights went up and the testing started. I hate those moments, because you can feel the tension everywhere is rising and the band always takes too long to appear. But I was in a good spot I saw them way before they came on-stage, since the curtains were a little open. I could see Slash (I even said "if he's wearing a red shirt when he comes onstage, then I've already seen him", I saw the drummer peeking through the curtains.
But finally they came. And everything was so electrifying, even before they started playing the first song. The light effects, the crowd going wild with Slash coming on-stage and me going wild when Scott came onstage The gig was pure rock'n'roll, as raw as it should be. Guitars playing loudly and awesomely, the drums were amazing... only Scott's voice was a bit overshadowed by all the sound, but so what? He had such a presence on stage, always dancing around and climbing the sound columns ( so close to me), with such energy. He did whatever he wanted with us, I think that after the first two songs everyone surrendered to the huge colossus that was on stage. Survivors of the grunge era.
Apart from their album, they also played two Guns'n'Roses songs (I Used To Love Her and It's so Easy), Stone Temple Pilots (Sex Type Thing, Crackerman) and Nirvana (Negative Creep). Of course the Coliseum crashed down when Slash started playing Guns, because most of those people went there to see him, but it meant nothing to me... I'm not a Guns fan. Everytime I think of them, I think of November's Rain and that Bon Jovi-ish video and.. nah.
Highlights: I can only think of Scott and his presence onstage. You know how it feels like to finish a gig with your hormones running so wild that you wish you were a groupie? That's the kind of thing. I'm sure it's probably an act, that he does that everytime, but damn, is that good or what! All the dancing, all the energy, everything! I loved the concert. I've never been to one that was so pure and raw rock'n'roll everywhere, from start to end. Never. And I'm dying to repeat the experience.
Setlist:
Sucker Train Blues Do It For The Kids Headspace Spectacle Crackerman Illegal i Song Fall to Pieces Big Machine (*bzzz*) Set Me Free Used to Love Her Slither Sex Type Thing It's So Easy Negative Creep

NIGHTWISH
I finally got to see Nightwish last night at the Carling Academy in Birmingham, a grotty, cramped venue in a dubious part of the city, but nothing was going to dampen my enthusiasm at seeing them. As a member of the official UK fan club I was allowed into the venue before the doors opened, leaving the other fans standing in the cold, grey drizzle of a typical British evening. As a result I was able to choose my spot in the front row and positioned myself in front of the keyboards. The venue filled up quickly, the show had completely sold out, as have all their other UK dates on this tour, and it got crowded and hot very quickly. Tristania were the support act and were better then I had been expecting. I enjoyed their set although I still think there are too many of them (7 members) I think they could do without the 'growly' vocalist. I always think the worst part of any gig is waiting while the roadies set up the equipment however this time it was slightly more interesting as we were trying to spot all the crew from the End of Innocence DVD. We saw the infamous Tero, known for his back stage antics which include stripping, jumping into freezing lakes, smashing guitars and drinking unmentionable substances. Finally Nightwish took to the stage and it was a fantastic show. Tarja's voice live is incredible. They played mainly tracks off the latest Once album but with some old favourites mixed in which kept the crowd happy. As well as being excellent musicians the band were also entertaining to watch. Tarja had a good interaction with the crowd, Tuomas was pulling faces and Emmpu was running up and down the stage stirring up the audience. Halfway through the set the crowd surges started and I became so crushed I was unable to move. I could nod my head and that was about it. I couldn't even move my arms to clap! While Tarja took a break the rest of the band performed a Pink Floyd cover which went down really well. The the roles were switched when Tarja sang their Finnish Folk song 'Kuolema' I was really pleased when during the encore they played Ghost Love Score which was the highlight of the gig for me. They ended with 'Wish I had an Angel' which had the crowd going mad. Unfortunately I missed the sweaty towel Tuomas threw into the crowd but I did managed to get one of Emppu's plectrums. Great night! One of the best gigs I've been to. Can't wait for Manchester on Friday.
Set List: Dark Chest of Wonders Planet Hell Come Cover Me The Kinslayer The Siren The Phantom of the Opera High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) Bless the Child Wishmaster Kuolema Slaying the Dreamer Nemo

Sleeping Sun Ghost Love Score Wish I Had An Angel
Even better I got to meet the band before the gig after winning a competition. I spent 20 mins with them in a very small upstairs room of the venue. Despite having plenty of questions to ask them I went completely blank in their presence and remained mute in a corner. However they were all exceptionally nice, down to earth people who signed all our stuff and posed for photos. A truly fantastic day! ;D ;D
Me with the band
..and with Tuomas eek!

Yep, it's me again. ;D Nightwish Manchester Academy 18-02-05 Before the gig I hung around with the meet and greet winners hoping against hope that one of them wouldn't show or didn't have a guest but no such luck and it was with a slightly heavy heart that I watched them disappear through the back doors to meet the band. It was cold, very cold queuing for four hours but it was cool meeting people from the Nightwish forum and at least it didn't rain. However I was extremely glad when the doors finally opened. I managed to get to the front again, despite vowing not to after getting crushed so badly previously, but I couldn't help myself. I was on the very edge of the stage though so I thought the crush might be less. I enjoyed Tristania's set a lot more this time round. The crowd were better. Not as rough as Birmingham, and more enthusiastic and energetic. Thankfully I was able to move freely throughout the gig with no crushing. Nightwish didn't come on untill 9.15 by which point everyone was chanting impatiently. They seemed in a good mood and more relaxed then previously. Tuomas was grinning at everyone and pulling faces again. Emppu remembered me from the meet and greet and gave me a huge grin. The atmosphere was incredible. Everyone was jumping up and down and singing along. I think the band were quite surprised by the reaction. During Nemo it began 'raining' when a water machine dropped a huge curtain of water across the front of the stage. The gig was amazing. Birmingham was really good but Manchester was incredible. It was the best gig I have ever been to. At the end of the gig Nightwish stood together at the front of the stage whilst the hall erupted. It was an overwhelming and highly emotional experience. The gig went too fast for me and I didn't want them to leave the stage, knowing it will probably be another year or so before they return to these shores. As they were about to go Tuomas stopped to wipe the sweat from his brow. I knew he was going to throw the towel into the crowd and I managed to catch his eye, giving him a rather desperate, pleading look of 'Give me the damn towel!' It worked though as instead of hurling it into the crowd he threw it to me at the front. I caught it, but so did another girl and a vicious tug of war ensued. Unfortunately my boyfriend was caught in the middle of it and his camera got broken. I won it and stuffed the towel up my top. It was at this point that I realised wearing a tight bodice wasn't such a good idea. The band left the stage and I watched them disappear, staring wistfully after them until I felt a sharp tug and realised that damn girl and stolen my towel again! Now she had pissed me off and I got it back from her in no uncertain terms. Incidently it smells of washing powder and little else. And that was the end of a fantastic night. I am so going. More news to come on this.

So... I went and saw Kaiser Chiefs, Weezer and the Foos tonight.
It was amazing. Kaiser Chiefs was ok, the crowd wasn't really responding as well to them as I thought they would. We had seats in the back so we weren't in the general admission area, but if we were I would be going nuts in the front (and hurting myself; see Blink concert review from last year). But anyway, Weezer were really good, they started out a bit slow for my liking, but then they got into Buddy Holly the crowd went nuts. They had this blacklight fish scaley thing in the back as their backdrop, but then they got rid of that and had this big Weezer "W" (sort of like =w=) all lit up and it was so cool. Oh, and then they had a blackout and when they got back Brian (is that his name? The lead guy) was on this little stage in the middle of the crowd and he did an accoustic version of Island in the Sun which was like, the coolest thing ever. They also did all their big songs, during Hash Pipe I almost fell off my seat (I had stand on it because I'm so freakign short) but it was all good.
And then the Foo Fighters came out! It was so great... Dave Grohl really knew how to play with the crowd and get them all fired up. The best thing was when, right at the beginning of their show he was like, "I don't like to talk; I like to play song after song after song." And they did! They opened with Times Like These and then My Hero and then Best of you, and later Up in Arms (slow first, then fast) and... I'll see if I can find a set list online. But it was so great, Dave was screaming (and then saying he was as deaf as a post, which I think we all were by this time) and at one time he even ran into the crowd through a barriered-off bit and sat on the stage in the middle of the crowd, posed for pictures with people and played more stuff. I could not get enough of this guy. He was such an awesome entertainer, and the crowd loved him for it. You could really tell that he was really into what he was doing and he kept up the energy for the whole show (which was just under 2 hours). Almost right at the end they went off the stage and I was thinking, "No! They haven't even played Monkey Wrench!", and then after 5 minute they ran back out and played a 10-minute version of it! I was so spastic at that time, I can't remember what happened but it was really, really good. Oh, and their set was cool too. They had TVs suspended from the roof (or really big screens?) and like, massive speakers piled on top of each other in the back and yeah. It was so, so, so awesome.
I can't hear anything at the moment and I have a speech to make tomorrow and my voice is gone from screaming but I don't care! I had a great time!
